Looks Like Someone Has a Sixpack of the Mondays The offseason is...almost...over. We have one final episode left in the second season of “Offseason On the Brink Womens Bryce Love Jersey ,” and it promises to be a very fun night in the basement indeed. Yes, there was pain this summer—losing Derrius Guice is not going to stop hurting anytime soon. There was also Payne this summer though—our top draft pick, Da’Ron Payne looks every bit the part of elite prospect at a position where you can’t overstate the importance of talent. We said farewell to a guy drafted and developed in-house who put his name on some all-time Redskins records (Kirk Cousins). We said hello to a guy whose “dirty toughness” provides a stark contrast to the manner in which teammates interact with their quarterback (Alex Smith). There are 32 fanbases who are holding onto some form of hope and optimism today, and the Washington group is firmly in that category this week. To that, I say, “Rightfully so.” I have seen my fair share of early Septembers around here. I understand the difference between being hungry to watch NFL games and being starved to watch Redskins football. Under Dan Snyder’s stewardship, the Redskins organization has delivered some whoppers when it comes to contentious, blood-boiling, love-killing offseasons. I have watched fellow fans as their eyes glazed over, signaling a turn from passion to apathy in the wake of endless shenanigans. Despite a few soap operas that we would have all rather avoided (McLovin, Kirk drama, Shanahan/RG3, Bruce Allen “fill-in-the-blank,” etc.), I would argue that this past offseason has loosely followed what just about officially can be called a trend: the Redskins are getting younger and more talented in the most stable coaching regime we have ever seen under Snyder. Let that truth sink in for a moment...and ask yourself if you are appropriately psyched for this season. Ask yourself if you would trade in the ability to watch every other game going on this weekend to watch just the Redskins game. For many of us, the question seems crazy on its face—of course we would eschew all other NFL action to just watch our boys—but the rise of fantasy football has coincided with the decline of the Redskins the last 10-15 years. I think it’s fair to say that more than a few fans have gravitated towards a more general love of the game from the singular love of the burgundy and gold. We as Redskins fans absolutely have reason to be optimistic and hopeful, and not because “every year, some team that nobody expects to do well turns around and does well.” That has been my argument once or twice in the past...likely when it was literally the only hope that existed. I know the feeling that goes along with that and it is very clearly not that feeling this time around. Despite my pair of burgundy and gold-shaded glasses, I can honestly see through the fog of perfunctory Redskins coverage done at the national level. I get it. Redskins news doesn’t drive national sports traffic...positive Redskins news that is. Sure, everyone loves watching us try to tread water in a tank full of mud, but the undercurrent of real professional football activity at Redskins Park is not going to win many viewers in the nooks and crannies of this great sports-loving nation. Seeing national power rankings authors consistently put the Redskins at #20 or worse is okay with me. Just as I am annually told that I am too high on this team, I know that your average sportswriter is not exactly turning over every rock when it comes to predicting the 2018 season here in Washington. To many professional outsiders, they see a Lombardi Trophy in Philadelphia, Eli Manning to Odell Beckham in New York and...whatever it is about helmets with stars on them that makes sportswriters act like teeny bopper girls at a Justin Beiber concert. The only thing there that makes any sense to me is the trophy up I-95...as much as it kills me, I get it. It matters. Still, Eli Manning has proven perfectly capable of being just good enough for his team to be just bad enough. Dallas is losing offensive linemen like Montgomery Burns lost softball players from his team of ringers. In fairness to these writers, they don’t know what a sound and contending Redskins team/roster looks like. They just know that if they wait long enough, the Redskins themselves will offer a compelling reason why it...just...won’t...work. As far as I can see...that is not the case right now at all. Not at all!!For example, I know as a Redskins fan that I have not seen a defensive line like the one I am about to see on Sunday anchored by Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne. I know that it becomes the reason why a secondary stands out on gameday. I have been the guy who tried to argue that Josh Norman would be so good it would make his defensive linemen better. It did not make me look smart (to be fair, that is a tough job already). That is not how it works. If your defensive line stinks, everyone behind them is going to look bad. Even in men like Tim Settle, Matt Ioannidis and even Caleb Brantley, the team has size and talent that should give opposing offensive coordinators fits at the point of attack. Ask yourself this: when is the last time you were ever legitimately excited about a Redskins team/season because of their defensive line? Continue the line of questioning: where are games won and lost? What did Bobby Beathard teach us? What is this site named after? You win in the trenches. If we were going to tout any one thing that is guiding our preseason emotions, it should be that our defensive line is poised to be dominant. That is the kind of thing that fans of contenders point to in the days leading up to a season-opening game. And when you are touting the big guys up front, you have a lot more than the whimsical hopes attached to historical cinderella stories.I’ll close out my offseason Sixpacks with a thought I have been hitting often on the podcast and in this space: this is the Year of Jay Gruden. I think I saw that he is up to 6th or 7th on the sports betting list of coaches most likely to be fired. Again, I get it. There have been few owners that have churned through as many head coaches as Dan Snyder. Certainly his pace of hiring and firing has put him on that map. Still, in Gruden, we have the best semblance of continuity and stability on the sidelines as we have seen in the last 20 years. Does it need to get better? Most assuredly, but it needs the chance to get better and that comes with the pairing of a veteran quarterback mind and an offensive guru that feels he finally has the right trigger man on the field (with all respect to Kirk Cousins). People always ask me what will be different with Alex Smith on the field. It is a tough question to answer. At times, you might not notice much difference at all. After all, the Redskins offense has been pretty productive the last few years. That said, only Redskins fans truly understand the very unique form of EBC (extreme butt clenching) that occurs while watching Redskins games. It is like a dream where you are behind the wheel of a racecar going full speed toward a hairpin curve, and you realize there is no steering wheel or brake pedal. To me, Alex Smith is both of those things to this team. He has won over his teammates with his leadership and work ethic, and he has demanded as much from them as he has from himself. His experience in the league should give him a leg up when it comes to being able to do a few things Kirk Cousins could not. Jay Gruden is counting on the calculator in Alex’s head being that much more refined than Kirk’s, just enough to make that crucial third down read, or just enough to avoid that drive-killing mistake. The difference may end up being subtle, but I believe it will manifest itself most in the confidence that Smith inspires in both his teammates and the fans. In other words, the EBC quotient should decline. The big knock on Allen was that many doubted his athleticism. He showed at the Combine that it should not be much of a concern overall though he may fit best in certain schemes. He is considered a borderline 1st round prospect.StrengthsGood size, length, and athleticism for a defensive end prospect.Plays in a disciplined and measured way. Aware of whats happening on the play. Rarely gets moved off his spot or takes himself out of plays with erratic movements. Strong at establishing contain on his side of the line. As a pass rusher he can generate a lot of power from his lower body to help collapse the pocket. Can dip his shoulder underneath the offensive tackle to help beat him and turn the corner to pursue uses length to bring guys down.Hands are always active in the passing lane and he can disrupt the vision and accuracy of the QB as well as cause some deflections.Played everywhere on the defensive line. Consistent and high effort player. WeaknessesAgility and quickness don’t pass the eye test. Like our own Ryan Kerrigan this guy could be a pro bowler but may never quite hit the next level because of athletic limitations. Really tight and stiff in his lower body.Has tweener size. Likely a better fit as a 4-3 base end but without the twitch. Can fit in a 3-4 base but will have size concerns.Needs to improve functional strength because of the above. A lot of things point to Allen becoming a good player especially over time. He is fundamentally sound. He doesn’t have to come off the field in passing downs. He’s a smart and active player. side defensive end here with exception to Jonathan Allen the current Redskins DL starters all came into the league with better measured functional strength than Z Allen. The bench press is certainly no foolproof indicator of the strength of a player but you can see after watching Allen how much more effective he would be if this area was improved. Size might have also been a concern a few years ago but at 281 he is 5 lbs lighter than Jon Allen. I think Zach could make that work out. He plays with a really good football IQ and could come in and contribute to the rotation immediately. His abilities would certainly help the Redskins contain in the run game and he does bring a valuable dynamic as a pass rusher as well. While it certainly would rub some people the wrong way to spend another top pick on this position group the fact is that they are the identity of the team and quite frankly their ability to remain healthy and fresh will determine the overall success of the defense. Jon Allen and Daron Payne both played at least 75% of the snaps last year on defense only two other pairs of teammates did that last year (Suh and Donald | Myles Garrett and Ogunjobi re: Football Outsiders). Other team defenses simply swap out their guys more frequently than the Skins do (no doubt offensive success plays a role as well). Another investment in the DL would only strengthen what is the identity and key deciding factor in team success.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict's appeal to overturn his suspension for the rest of the season for a helmet-to-helmet hit was denied Wednesday.Appeals officer Derrick Brooks ruled he would not reduce the longest suspension ever handed down for an on-field infraction. Brooks is appointed jointly by the NFL and the NFLPA and heard Burfict's appeal of the ban for the final 12 games of the regular season and the playoffs.Brooks upheld the decision handed down last week by NFL Vice President of football operations Jon Runyan to punish Burfict severely for "repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules" after the latest hit on Indianapolis tight end Jack Doyle on Sept. 29. It was the third time Burfict has been suspended for a dangerous hit on the field to go along with several others that led to fines.The suspension is without pay https://www.thesteelerslockerroom.com/authentic-terrell-edmunds-jersey , costing Burfict more than $1.1 million in salary and per game active roster bonuses.Burfict had one suspension reduced from five games to three games in 2017 but was unable to get a reduction again after a hearing that included testimony from Burfict and members of the Raiders, including coach Jon Gruden. (AP) — Antonio Brown’s credentials were well established long before he arrived in Oakland as the Raiders new No. 1 receiver.Brown posted six straight 100-catch seasons for the Steelers with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and was the NFL’s most prolific receiver before he forced his way out of Pittsburgh to join the Raiders in March.Those impressive credentials mean little to coach Jon Gruden, who is pushing Brown as hard as any of his other receivers as Oakland begins preparations for the 2019 season. It’s a similar approach to the one Gruden took during his first stint in Oakland, when he inherited future Hall of Fame receiver Tim Brown and then added the game’s most productive receiver ever in Jerry Rice.“He challenged me from the meeting room to the field,” Brown said Tuesday of Gruden. “Lining me up at all kind of positions Bo Jackson Jersey White , hurrying up the offense’s tempo to see if I’m able to mentally pick up what I’m doing, where I’m lining up really fast. But Bears were offside.— With ball now on the 1, Broncos go for 2 and make it for 14-13 lead.— One play after kickoff, Broncos Bradley Chubb called for roughing the passer to give Bears ball on their 45.— Three incompletions later, Bears receiver Allen Robinson II catches ball on Denver 35, clock ticks to "0:00" and Broncos storm the field. But refs say Robinson was down with 1 second left and Chicago called timeout.— Pinero bangs it through for the win — and gets to keep his job for another week.AGREE TO DISAGREE: Imagine the conversation Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey and coach Doug Marrone could have had AFTER the game.Ramsey and Marrone had to be separated during an argument on the bench during the first quarter of Jacksonville's 13-12 loss to Houston. Apparently, Ramsey was upset the coach didn't throw a challenge flag on third-and-2 completion on a drive that led to a Texans field goal.But Marrone's biggest decision came at the end Bradley Chubb Jersey White , after the Jaguars had scored a touchdown to pull within one with 30 seconds left. That has been especially true for their early round picks, which have usually been misses, providing tenuous production at best.In order to turn things around for the long haul, it was mission critical for the franchise to have a successful draft this past April. As soon as the 2018 NFL Draft was over, the franchise was lauded for their group of draftees — with many draft analysts and media personalities ranking the Broncos’ class as one the best.During training camp and the preseason, we began to see why they were given such praise. Even so, many across Broncos Country remained cautious with their expectations, given their history of hype letdowns over the years. Yet two games into the regular season, it appears that this year’s crop of rookies is indeed the real deal.According to Patrick Smyth, the team’s Executive Vice President of Public and Community Relations, rookies Royce Freeman, Phillip Lindsay and Courtland Sutton have combined for 366 total yards — the most by an offensive trio of rookies in well over a decade. On the defensive side of the ball, top pick Bradley Chubb has also made his presence known. In two games, he has six tackles, a half sack and eight quarterback pressures. Additionally, day three selections Josey Jewell, DaeSean Hamilton and Keishawn Bierria have made been integral special teams players. So far, so good for the 2018 draft class.“Our young guys who are playing for us, they’re all qualified, they’re all smart guys and they’re well-coached. That’s huge,” stated Head Coach Vance Joseph after the team’s victory against the Oakland Raiders. “Obviously with game time and more experience, they’re going to play better for us. To give up that many picks and put that many high hopes on me. . . . Every team is.The fact that the NFL has parameters for determining the teams that can be compelled to do the show (teams without a new head coach, that haven’t been to the playoffs in the last two years, and that haven’t done the show in the last 10 years) doesn’t prevent other teams from putting a hand in the air, Horshack-style.The NFL doesn’t have to grant the assignment to a team that volunteers, but any team can volunteer. With none of the five teams that can be forced to do (Raiders, Lions, Giants, 49ers, Washington) apparently interested in embracing the assignment, it may take a volunteer to find a team that will do it happily in 2020.The fact that no one seems to be inclined to volunteer for bolsters the notion that maybe the league should quit doing it. Up to this point the Raiders were making smart, conservative moves. The deal for Antonio Brown fits in nicely."Making a trade for arguably the best receiver in the NFL may seem like anything but conservative. And you could argue that it isn’t if you like. But unless you’re really looking for negatives, it’s hard to criticize how the Raiders went about acquiring Antonio Brown.Friday, the team made several moves to retain key players. They weren’t flashy, but necessary. They placed round two tenders on starting cornerback Daryl Worley and receiving scat back, Jalen Richard. They also held onto safety and special teams maven Erik Harris on a 2-year deal. Raiders fans: Subscribe to the Silver and Black Pride podcastThose deals along with the previous one to re-sign reserve guard Denzelle Good on a one-year deal are under-the-radar smart moves that keep the necessary pieces in place.Another necessity for the immediate hopeful improvement of this team was to get Derek Carr a weapon. The big name out there — and it’s a very big one — was Antonio Brown Bo Jackson Jersey White , who was loudly demanding a trade from the Steelers and for a lot of guaranteed money to come with that.Jon Gruden is not known for having a poker face. He wears his emotions all over his face, hence the nickname ‘Chucky’. It was no secret he loved Antonio Brown and no secret to the Steelers he wanted to make a trade for him. And after some of the trades he has made since taking over the Raiders last year, there was reason to worry he would get overzealous and sell the farm for Brown.He didn’t.The Steelers were said to be asking for a first round pick. That would suggest maybe the Raiders’ picks at 24 and 27 overall were in play. They may have even been perfectly fine with the Raiders pick at 35 at the top of the second. But any of those picks should have been off limits in this deal. in the third round would be too much, even for a player as talented as Brown.After all, he is about to turn 31, has raised some serious concerns about his character with the way he has handled his trade demands this offseason, and has made no bones about how much money he would like to be paid and how he won’t settle for ‘unguarantees.’In the end, the Raiders got Brown for that pick at 66th overall in the third round and pick 141 in the fifth round. That’s a good deal. They stood their ground on not giving up their pick at 35 and they won.As for the salary, reports were that Brown was wanting to get a raise to make him the highest paid receiver in football. He would have had to get a deal that averaged over $18 million to surpass Odell Beckham Jr. What he got was no additional years on the three years he had left in his contract with the Steelers, but with $30 million in guarantees where he had none and a total of $50 million. That puts his average at $16.7 million per season, which is actually slightly less than what he was averaging, but additional money for him overall.Those guarantees though. They’re important. Some believe NFL players shouldn’t have to sign contracts with so much non-guaranteed money. It ends up making contracts one-sided in the team’s favor. But Brown wasn’t having it. He wanted his guarantees, and you can’t blame him for that. And the Raiders didn’t make him the highest paid receiver in football, so they got that.The Raiders get a true number one at 31 years old who has at least two elite years left in him for two mid round picks and Brown gets security. Oh, and Derek Carr gets easily the best receiver he’s ever had in his life catching passes from him. And everyone’s happy.
ENGLEWOOD Bradley Chubb Broncos Jersey , Colo. — After entering the offseason scrambling again at quarterback, John Elway emerged from draft weekend set for the present and maybe the future at a position that’s been his Frankenstein ever since Peyton Manning retired three years ago.Drew Lock will be Joe Flacco‘s understudy — providing he can beat out Boise State QB Brett Rypien, who was among the undrafted players Denver signed after the draft concluded, for the backup job.Lock, the second-round pick from Missouri will take a wait-and-watch approach like reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes did for a year behind Alex Smith in Kansas City, or even like Aaron Rodgers did for three seasons behind Brett Favre in Green Bay.By taking Lock with the 42nd pick and immediately declaring him Flacco’s apprentice, the Broncos are dodging the kind of QB competition that blew up on them two straight summers with 2016 first-round bust Paxton Lynch.Lock and head coach Vic Fangio also are avoiding the pressure cooker that awaits first-rounders Kyler Murray in Arizona and Dwayne Haskins in Washington, QBs expected to make immediate impacts.“I think it will certainly take pressure off him and it will allow him to sit and learn,” Lock’s father, Andy, a restaurateur from Kansas City, told The Associated Press on Saturday. “And also I think from an organizational standpoint, maybe the Broncos don’t feel as much pressure to get him on the field early.“It’s a great recipe, and I’m excited for that.”So is his son Von Miller Jersey White , who realizes he has a lot to learn as a pro.“I think I’m just going to take it day by day here,” Lock said, declining to declare any timetable for taking over as the starter. “I’m going to try to be the best teammate possible because I know if there’s one thing to help win over a team and win over a locker room, it’s come in and just be a good teammate.“Then I think I’ll gain the respect and the trust of everybody in that locker room” like Mahomes did in K.C. and Rodgers did in Green Bay.Lock was hoping to be a first-round selection but said he knows deep down his landing spot was much more important than his draft slot.“Obviously, you’d like to get picked a little earlier, but I’m here,” Lock said. “We got Dalton (Risner) because of it, we got Noah (Fant) because of it, and if that’s the way it was supposed to be, then so be it. He used his first three picks on Iowa TE Fant, Kansas State RG Risner and Lock. His top defensive addition is Ohio State DT Dre’Mont Jones. Saturday’s picks were versatile Oregon LB Justin Hollinsand Colorado WR Juwann Winfree in the sixth. He also acquired former Broncos special teams stud Dekoda Watson in a trade.SURPRISE MOVESElway didn’t consider drafting a QB in the first round, but he traded with Cincinnati to move up to 42nd and select Lock 32 spots — a full round — after many projections had him going. Elway also pulled a stunner by taking Winfree, who started just seven games in college, missed the 2016 season with a torn ACL and sat out four games last year with a sprained ankle.HOW THEY DIDElway filled a major need by drafting Fant in the first round. Fant clocked a 4.5-second 40-yard time at the NFL scouting combine, faster than 17 wide receivers. In Hollins, they’re hoping they landed the ILB who could help the Broncos smother opposing tight ends like George Kittle who burned them for 210 yards and a TD in the first half of a game last season that essentially ended their slim playoff hopes.WHAT’S NEXTAddressing CB Chris Harris Jr.’s request for a hefty pay raise. The 30-year-old star is due $7.8 million in 2019, about half of what cornerbacks of his caliber are making. Harris is skipping the offseason program while Fangio installs his new defense and recently issued a pay-me-or-trade-me request after what he felt were disrespectful comments by Elway, who has a history of playing hardball with his stars. The Denver Broncos are in dire need of a linebacker with sideline-to-sideline athleticism. North Carolina State product Germaine Pratt would provide that for the franchise’s defense."It’s been a long ride since the end of the season, but the 2019 NFL Draft is less than two weeks away. During that time frame, one of the key areas fans have been hoping the Denver Broncos address early on the draft is the inside linebacker position. While the team has a handful of quality players on the roster, finding a prospect with sideline-to-sideline athleticism is paramount for Vic Fangio’s defense. Throughout the process, LSU’s Devin White and Michigan’s Devin Bush have been linked to the franchise the most with their first round selection. At this point in time, it seems like White is a mortal lock to go well before the Broncos pick at tenth overall. Furthermore John Elway Jersey , it has yet to be determined if John Elway and his scouting staff have a high grade on the former Wolverine.If the Broncos opt to forego addressing linebacker in the first round, they will have to seek out options later on in the draft. NC State product Germaine Pratt is someone they will likely consider. For his first two seasons with the Wolfpack Pratt was a free safety, but transitioned to linebacker after his 2016 season which was missed due to a shoulder injury. He only started one game for their defense in 2017, but ranked fourth on the team in tackles. Pratt saved his best for last once he became a full-time starter in 2018 — posting 104 tackles, 10 for loss and 6 sacks. Though he is not yet the sum of his parts, Pratt’s athleticism and nose for the football stand out on tape. He is a prospect who has an incredibly high ceiling and many scouts and analysts believe his best football is ahead of him. (AP) — stepped down from his daily duties as owner of the Denver Broncos, team president and CEO Joe Ellis ran the team in a “What would Pat do?” sort of way.With Bowlen’s death last month, that’s no longer the case.Ellis told The Associated Press that while the team will always honor Bowlen’s memory, it’s time for the Broncos to establish a new identity.“I got to thinking about that,” Ellis said Thursday from the sideline as the Broncos became the first NFL team to open training camp . “I think it’s a fair question at this point because he’s no longer with us. He was with us (the last five years) even though he was not out here. I got to go see him and I always sort of felt his presence. And I think Pat would want us to move on from him a little bit, you know? I don’t think we’re going to be able to do that totally because of what he’s provided all of us …“But it’s time to buckle up your chin strap here and do things the Broncos way,” Ellis said. “Yeah, we want to make Pat proud. We’re going to honor him. It’s a subtle honoring with the decal on the helmet and he’ll always be in the back of my mind. But you know what, we have to act independently now in some fashion. I hope you can make sense of this.”Bowlen died June 13 at age 75, nine weeks shy of his enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.When Alzheimer’s forced him to step away five years earlier, Bowlen entrusted Ellis to operate the team with full authority and represent the Broncos in league matters until one of his seven children was deemed ready to take over. Ellis drew on his working relationship with the notoriously publicity-shy Bowlen that spanned nearly three decades to continue operating the team as Bowlen would have during those five years.Ellis said he doesn’t want to look back anymore.“There’s been so much talk about Pat and his excellence and everything that he’s done and it’s all well-deserved and it’s well-acknowledged — he’s going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Ellis said. “But I know if he were here and he were advising me John Elway Jersey White , he’d say, ‘Listen, you know, your job is to get everybody in the organization to pull together and do this for our fans and do this for themselves and each other, players, coaches.
