Malelane, South Africa - Charl Schwartzel fired a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday to successfully defend his Alfred Dunhill Championship title. Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey . Schwartzel finished 72 holes at 17-under 271 for his ninth European Tour victory and third at this event, having secured his maiden win here in 2005. "Its always nice to get a win and get some confidence up," said the 29-year- old Schwartzel. Richard Finch, playing on a sponsors invite after failing to retain his card at the end of the 2013 season, shot a 70 at Leopard Creek Country Club and ended alone in second place at 13-under 275. Simon Dyson (67), Ross Fisher (69) and Romain Wattel (71) shared third place at 10-under, one shot ahead of Soren Hansen, who carded a 71 and took solo sixth at minus-9. Magnus A. Carlsson (66) and Simon Wakefield (68) tied for seventh at 8-under, while Danny Willett (69) and Warren Abery (68) shared ninth at 7-under. Last week, Schwartzel coughed up the lead during the final round of the South African Open Championship, stumbling to a triple bogey and a double bogey en route to a tie for fourth place. Such was not the case on Sunday, although Finch managed to threaten early, as the Englishman erased Schwartzels overnight lead with birdies at Nos. 1 and 3. After four straight pars to open, Schwartzel awoke with a deft tee shot to tap-in range at the par-3 fifth, which he converted for birdie and a 1-stroke lead. That margin held at the turn, with the duo matching birdies at the sixth and eighth, where Schwartzel holed from 20 feet. Finch failed to keep pace during the inward stretch, however, as he bogeyed the 11th and fell behind by a pair after an errant drive led to a penalty drop. Schwartzel pushed his advantage to three shots with a birdie from eight feet at the 13th and the tournament was all but decided at the next, where Finchs approach from a fairway bunker hit rocks on the edge of the water and landed in a bush, leading to a double-bogey 6. Schwartzel made par there, extending his lead to five strokes, and although Finch birdied the 15th, the South African cruised home, parring out to cap his bogey-free victory lap. "He got off to a fantastic start and mine was a little shaky," Schwartzel said of his playing partner Finch. "I know with this golf course out of experience that its a long way from over and you just have to keep hitting good shots." NOTES: Schwartzel became the first player to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship three times. In addition to his three wins at this event, Schwartzel was runner-up in the 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011 seasons ... Schwartzel is the first player to successfully defend his European Tour title since Luke Donald at the BMW PGA Championship in 2011-2012 ... Finch last won on the European Tour in 2008, when he titled twice. Darren ODay Jersey . A steady downpour and low temperatures were predicted for much of the night. No makeup date was immediately announced, although it was determined that the game will not be part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.Winnipeg Goldeyes shortstop Tyler Kuhn led off Friday nights game at Shaw Park with a solo home run and then finished it in the ninth with another solo homer. But that was the beginning and the end of it. The Winnipeg Goldeyes didnt score another run. Friday night, Gary Southshore RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock held the Goldeyes to one run on seven hits through the first six innings and then the bullpen gave up only one more the rest of the way as Gary invaded Shaw Park and beat the Fish 3-2. It was Winnipegs fourth straight loss and during those four games, the Goldeyes have managed only five runs. Total. Winnipeg is now 34-18 on the season and remain in first place in the American Associations North Division, 5 1/2 games ahead of second-place St. Paul. “We just need to focus a little harder in those situations with runners in scoring position,” said Kuhn, who went three-for-five with two runs scored and two driven in. “And Im at fault, too. I had the bases loaded with one out in the second inning and just didnt get the job done. I didnt drive in a run when I should have. “But we have a good offense. Our defense and pitching is still strong. And this is baseball. You can lose four in a row and turn around and win five in a row. Its all about hard work. Thats baseball. Colby Rasmus Jersey. Come back to the park tomorrow, get our work done and turn this thing around.” After Kuhn opened the scoring with that solo shot in the first, Craig Maddox answered for Gary with a solo bomb of his own off Goldeyes starter Chandler Barnard in the second. Later in the inning, Drew Muren knocked in his first of two runs on the evening with a sacrifice fly and Gary had a 2-1 lead that they did not relinquish. In the fourth, Muren singled home a run to make it 3-1 and then Kuhn hit his second solo shot of the game and his third home run of the year in the bottom of the ninth to make it 3-2. Gary finished with three runs on nine hits, while the Goldeyes -- who had runners in scoring position in the first, second, fifth, seventh and eighth, but couldnt bring them home -- finished with two runs on 10 hits. Winnipeg left 10 men on base. Hiscock (6-4, 3.92 ERA) got the win for the Explorers, while Bernard (3-1, 3.65 ERA) suffered the loss. Former Goldeyes right-hander Barry Fowler got the save for Gary. The Goldeyes and RailCats will play Game 2 of this three-game series on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Shaw Park. Ethan Hollingsworth (3-0, 2.84 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Stephen Bougher (4-3, 4.08 ERA) will take to the hill for Gary.
