LISBON, Portugal -- Napoli won 2-1 at Benfica but both teams qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League on Tuesday after Besiktas fell to a surprise 6-0 thrashing at Dynamo Kiev.Dries Mertens, who scored two goals in a 4-2 win against Benfica in Italy, changed the Group B match after coming on as a substitute. The Belgium international set up the opener for Jose Callejon on the hour mark before securing the win in the 79th as Napoli topped its Champions League group for the first time.We had already been burned once by looking at the result of the other match, said Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri, whose team had squandered earlier chances to qualify for the last 16. So, it really hardly mattered to us what was happening in Kiev. We wanted first place to make Napoli history. But I think that there is really very little advantage to finishing first. It was more for our own satisfaction, because we are convinced that we are the team that has played the best in this group. It was meant to be a battle to advance at Estadio da Luz but it turned out to be a shootout for top spot as Besiktas collapsed in Ukraine. Both Benfica and Napoli had missed several earlier opportunities to advance, with the Italian side nearly becoming the first team in Champions League history to advance from the group stage after only three matches -- before losing to Besiktas and drawing its next two games. Both teams had eight points coming into the match, one more than Besiktas, and Napoli knew a draw would be enough, having already defeated Benfica. It was an end-to-end start to the match but there were few clear chances and the tempo started to fall as the news filtered through that Besiktas was losing.Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina had been the busier of the two shot-stoppers in the first half but Napoli appeared more determined after the break. Callejon should have broken the deadlock four minutes into the second half but fired wide from a great position.Mertens was brought on in the 57th and had an immediate impact, with a lovely through ball to Callejon who dinked it over the onrushing Ederson.Mertens got on the scoresheet himself in the 79th, carving out space just inside the area, following a one-two between Callejon and Faouzi Ghoulam, and curling into the bottom left corner.Napoli gifted Benfica a consolation goal three minutes from time when Raul Albiol was caught napping. He should have easily cleared a long ball but Raul Jimenez seized the moment and fired past Reina. Steve Young Super Bowl Jersey . HOOVER, Ala. -- LSUs Leonard Fournette was putting up massive rushing numbers last season until opponents started changing their defenses to stuff the run. That put the onus on quarterback Brandon Harris to make them pay.He couldnt do it.Fournette believes thats about to change and Harris can become one of the leagues best quarterbacks. If so, LSU could quickly become the team to beat in the Southeastern Conference.I think hes doing a tremendous job and Im ready to see the new Brandon Harris on in September, Fournette said on Thursday at SEC media days. He has a new swag to himself. Hes talking like a quarterback should talk. Hes taking over at practice.Expectations are very high in Baton Rouge after a 9-3 season that included a 5-3 mark in the SEC. The Tigers won their first seven games last season before a three-game losing streak to Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi that derailed the season and nearly cost coach Les Miles his job.But Miles is back for this 12th season and LSU returns 17 starters, including nine on offense and eight on defense.Fournette -- who ran for an LSU single-season record 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns last season -- is considered one of the Heisman favorites and the defense includes seasoned veterans like safety Jamal Adams and linebacker Kendell Beckwith. The only real question is at quarterback. The 6-foot-3, 206-pound Harris had some good momentss last season, throwing for 2,165 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing about 54 percent of his passes.ddddddddddddCertainly our play there will be significant, Miles said.If Harris can keep opposing defenses honest through the passing game, it should leave a little more room for Fournette to run. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound junior was a Heisman candidate last season until his performance tailed off during the seasons most important games in November. He said falling out of the Heisman race wasnt disappointing. Instead, it was losing three crucial games that bugged him.I think we forgot our `why, Fournette said. Why we work so hard just to get here. We were on top of the world, 7-0 and were in the SEC, the hardest and best conference to play in. We just had to get that back.Miles also spent a few minutes Thursday discussing the recent shooting of Alton Sterling by a white police officer in Baton Rouge. He hopes the football program can be part of helping society change. You reach for others, Miles said. You need to be respectful of their life and their opinion and who they are. You need compassion for people.---Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP---AP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
