BALTIMORE -- Derek Jeter began the season on the disabled list, and thats how it will end. Danielle Hunter Jersey . The New York Yankees shortstop will miss the rest of the year after being placed on the DL on Wednesday with an injured left ankle. Jeter missed the first part of the season after breaking his left ankle in the 2012 playoffs. He returned to the DL twice more and played only 17 games, batting .190 with one homer and seven RBIs. And now, hes been shelved for a fourth time. "This entire season has been a nightmare for me physically," Jeter said. "Its a fitting end." The captain fully intends to return next year, even though he turns 40 on June 26. "I truly believe with a full off-season, working out and getting my strength back that I can get back to doing what I always have," Jeter said. "I dont think you think about the end of anything. Our job is to get ready to play. I tried to come back this year as quickly as possible. Maybe that was not the best thing to do. My job now is to get ready for next year. And I have to do that." Jeter last played Saturday against Boston. He was removed for a pinch runner after hurting his left ankle, and although a CT scan was negative, general manager Brian Cashman said the injury will need significant time to heal. "You have to let the pain dissipate and then give it a chance to let the ankle strengthen back up," Cashman said. "Were just not going to have the time to do that in any capacity right now. It puts him in a vulnerable situation and risks re-injury or further injury. And thats not something we are willing to do." His departure comes with New York in the thick of the AL wild-card hunt. "Its very disappointing not to be able to play, especially at this time of year," Jeter said. "This is when I want to play the most." The Yankees will miss him, but theyre counting on having Jeter in 2014. "I have seen him do this over and over and overcome a lot of things people thought he would not overcome," manager Joe Girardi said. "That just who he is. When you talk about whats inside Derek, hes special. Thats what made him great for so long." The current ankle injury is seemingly related to the one that occurred last October in the AL championship series against Detroit. "There is no new medical information other than the fact there were conversations that he has pain most likely stemming from weakness surrounding the bone, the muscles, tendons and ligaments, and it was not going to solve itself anytime soon," Cashman said. "And he would be vulnerable. Somethings going to give the more we run him out there. So we feel its best to shut him down. Let him prepare for next year. Thats the safest thing to do." Next year? Cashman is certain of it. "I have not thought I have watched his last game," Cashman said. "Not one time." New Yorks career leader with 3,316 hits, Jeter made his season debut on July 11 but hurt himself in that game and returned to the disabled list on July 19 (retroactive to July 12) with a right quad strain. After being activated on July 28, he was placed on the DL on Aug. 5 with a strained right calf. "It seemed like when he came back, he was fine and then he would play a couple of games and something would happen," Girardi said. "It seemed to be the repeated days seemed to get to him a little bit. That was frustrating for him. That was frustrating for all of us because we wanted him out there. I think thats why we decided to shut him down." Jeter was a regular in the lineup after his return on Aug. 26 before again running into problems with the ankle. Now hes done for good. "I think its just a matter of me not having any strength," Jeter said. "I have not been able to work out my legs or lift my legs since October of last year. I really think its from lack of strength. When I came back, I had two other leg issues because of weakness there. Ill have a whole off-season to get back to being able to work out. " Brendan Ryan, obtained in a trade with Seattle on Tuesday, was in the starting lineup at shortstop against the Orioles on Wednesday night. "I dont think its the most enviable position to step in after a legend," Ryan said. "Hes not going anywhere. I dont want it to sound like that. I dont even know what his status is really. If I play today, and not anymore after that, whatever it is I can do to help." Jalyn Holmes Jersey . Off-Season Game Plan looks at what the Blue Jackets may do to build upon last seasons success to return to the playoffs again next year. Pat Elflein Jersey . In the calls, Hernandez discussed the murder of Odin Lloyd, including his "belief about his criminal liability" and the "extent of his control over persons charged as accessories," according to the request filed Thursday in Fall River Superior Court. http://www.vikingsauthenticshop.com/Vikings-Linval-Joseph-Draft-Jersey/ . Dane Dobbie and Shawn Evans each had two goals and two assists for the Roughnecks (8-5), who outscored Minnesota 6-2 in the fourth quarter after being tied through 45 minutes. Curtis Dickson scored once and set up three more for Calgary and Dan MacRae, Geoff Snider, Tor Reinholdt, Karsen Leung and Matthew Dinsdale.BRISBANE, Australia -- South Africa broke its long drought in Brisbane and did it in emphatic style, with captain Jean de Villiers starting the celebrations in the 60th minute of a bonus-point 38-12 win over Australia on Saturday. The Springboks hadnt won in Brisbane since 1971 and came into the match on an eight-match losing streak in the city since their return from the apartheid era ban. They marked the end of the sequence with their biggest ever win on Australian soil. "Its always good to get a win against a (team) like Australia," de Villiers said. "To score four tries against Australia in Brisbane, you cant ask for more than that." The Springboks dominated from the start, with replacement prop Coenie Oosthuizen driving over from a close-range lineout in the sixth minute in an ominous sign of what was to come. The South African forwards dominated the set piece, the back row provided a steady flow of possession and the heavy, physical defence nullified the dangerous Australian backs. After wearing down the Wallabies, a burst of three tries in eight minutes sealed the result. De Villiers started and finished the movement that led to South Africas second try, and that started the flood gates after an hour. Zane Kirchner and Willie Le Roux also crossed out wide to secure the bonus point and give South Africa the lead in the Rugby Championship with three wins from three starts. Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer said the win should silence criticism of the South African style. "Everybody wrote us off and said its impossible to win here," Meyer said. "The whole week there was a mindset that we can win. "I thought our defence was awesome. Our scrums were great, the set pieces ... I believe we won the game firstly in the minds, and second without the ball. "We need to keep our feet on the ground and stay humble. Its a win, and next week its a bigger challenge. Jaleel Johnson Jersey. " The Springboks head to New Zealand on a nine-match winning streak, and with a one-point buffer over the All Blacks at the top of the Rugby Championship. The Australians are languishing at the bottom with three consecutive losses. The Wallabies were disjointed in attack, making only one clean line break in the first half and failing to score a try in a test against South Africa for the first time since 2001. All Australias points came off the boot of Christian Lealiifano with four penalties. The return of Quade Cooper at flyhalf failed to trigger the kind of enterprising attack required to penetrate South Africas swarming defence, and Israel Folaus switch from wing to fullback wasnt the instant success new coach Ewen McKenzie had hoped for. The Australians let themselves down with handling errors and poor discipline, frustrating both McKenzie and captain Will Genia. "The bottom line is that we made too many errors to be able to win," said McKenzie, who has presided over three straight losses since replacing Robbie Deans as Wallabies coach. "I cant keep saying that every week, because in the end you have to find our why we are making so many errors, either we are playing a game thats too complicated and the skill level doesnt match it or we dumb it down a bit and make it simpler, but that would be disappointing." The Wallabies havent looked like winning any of the three tests since McKenzie took charge, and have now lost five of their last six tests. Theyll have to regroup quickly to prepare for next weeks test against Argentina, before two away matches to finish off the championship. "We will have to take a hard look at ourselves, dust ourselves off and be better," Genia said. "We have to get a win. We need to start playing the rugby we know we can play."
