RIO DE JANEIRO -- For beating Allyson Felix, Shaunae Miller gets a gold medal. Maybe they should give her a cape, too.It took a head-first dive, Superwoman-style, for Miller to spring an Olympic upset Monday over Americas top female sprinter in the 400 meters and deny her a record fifth gold medal.Miller, a 22-year-old from the Bahamas who finished second to Felix at the world championships last year, took an early lead, then held off her charge along the straightaway. Neck-and-neck with two steps to go, Miller sprawled, dove and tumbled across the line to win by .07 seconds. Now, instead of a coronation for Felix, its a celebration for Miller, whose dive will go down as one of the most dramatic images weve seen at these, or any, Olympics. This is the moment I have been waiting for, Miller said. I just gave it my all.And she didnt even get the evenings biggest roars. Those went to pole vaulter Thiago Braz da Silva, who gave Brazil its first medal in track and field by setting an Olympic record (6.03 meters) to upset world-record holder and defending champion Renaud Lavillenie of France. But outside of Brazil, theyll be talking about The Dive.Starting from Lane 7, Miller expanded the lag, instead of getting gobbled up the way most women do when Felix is on the track.Stride for stride they ran down the last 100 meters, until the last few steps. Felix, classically trained by Bobby Kersee, made a textbook lean into the finish line. Miller tried something else. The dive is something no coach would ever teach. Then again, amazing things happen with a gold medal on the line.I was just focused on myself, Felix said when asked about the dive. I didnt really have too many thoughts on it.As Miller lay on her back, gasping for breath and maybe even stunned herself at what shed done, Felix sat on the ground stone-faced. Ten seconds passed. Then 20.While Miller jumped with her arms flailing forward, the rules say the win is determined by which athlete has any part of her torso cross the line first. The photo finish showed the negative image of Millers sprawled-out body. Her shoulder barely beat Felix to the line. The result popped up on the scoreboard: Miller won in 49.44 seconds. The bronze went to Jamaicas Shericka Jackson. What a finish. What a race.It marked quite a disappointment for Felix, whose season just didnt turn out the way she planned it.I dont think I ever quite had a year this tough, Felix said, as her eyes welled with tears. She was one of those rare athletes who had the cachet to get the Olympics to change the schedule. After winning the world championship at 400 meters last year, she put the 200-400 double in her sights for the Olympics. The schedule as it was originally written made it impossible: The 200 heats were scheduled for the same evening as the 400 final.Felix asked, and she received: The 200 heats were moved to the morning to give Americas best female sprinter a chance for the two-fer.But she never got to the starting line in the 200. She landed awkwardly on a medicine ball while doing core work in the gym during the spring and her ankle swelled up like a balloon.Suddenly, what once was a quest for two golds transformed into a struggle to simply make the Olympic team. She did in the 400 but not in the 200. Then, Miller showed up and handed Felix her third Olympic disappointment. This silver goes with the pair she won in 2004 and 2008 in the 200.Even so, she became the most decorated U.S. female track star, with seven overall medals, including three in the relays. But this was Millers night. The flagbearer for her country in the opening ceremonies, Miller came into the games 5 for 5 in her races this season, including Diamond League meets in Shanghai, Eugene and London. Now shes 6 for 6.A wild finish to a crazy night. It began with a downpour that stopped action in all the events and put the DJ to work, playing Singing In The Rain, Umbrella, and I Cant Stand the Rain, among other fare, while the fans waited out the delay. Those who stayed got their moneys worth.Miller got a few scratches and scrapes, but she also got the gold. BOSTON -- The Colorado Avalanche jumped ahead early and got yet another win in Boston -- this time to end a recent skid.Matt Duchene scored his 10th goal and John Mitchell got his first, lifting the Avalanche over the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Thursday night. The Avs had lost four straight and five of six, but again came out winners in Boston, where theyve won 10 times in their last 11 visits. We were off to a good start in the first period. We got a couple quick ones and we rode that, said Nathan MacKinnon, whose short-handed goal 12:57 into the game put Colorado up 2-0.The last time the Avs lost a game in Boston was March 30, 1998, when MacKinnon was just 2 years old.I had no idea. I know weve been hot here my first three years, MacKinnon said. Thats cool.Matt Duchene, John Mitchell and Carl Soderberg also scored for the Avs. Duchenes goal 5:30 into the game was the first of three unassisted tallies for Colorado, which shut down Boston in the third period after David Pastrnak scored twice in the second to pull the Bruins within 3-2.The Avs hadnt won since beating Columbus 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 21.We found a way to score first, which was nice, Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. We havent done that much lately, especially on this losing streak.Boston, coming off an overtime loss the night before at Washington, ended a streak of six straight games with a point. The Bruins are 4-1-2 in their last seven.Anton Khudobin had 18 saves for Boston, which fell behind 3-0 for the second straight night. The Bruins rallied Wednesday with three unanswered goals to force overtime before the Capitals won it 4-3. The Bruins didnt seem to have the energy for another comeback Thursday, getting just eight shots on goal in the third period.Until you can find your legs, youve got to be smart, and we werent, Boston coach Claude Julien said. We gave up some soft goals and certainly dug ourselvees a hole.ddddddddddddPastrnaks goals 1:20 apart in the second period briefly revived Boston, but the Bruins didnt score again despite outshooting Colorado 31-22 for the game.Calvin Pickard made 29 saves for the Avs.I think the second period we could have tidied it up a little bit. We lost some momentum, Duchene said. I think there is still lots of room for improvement but a start like that -- you get out to a 3-0 lead -- its pretty tough to blow that. Youve got to really play poorly and we played really solid in the third and especially in the first.Colorado led 2-0 after the first, then Mitchell made it 3-0 after forcing a turnover at the Colorado blue line and taking it the other way for a wrist shot that beat Khudobin on the stick side.It was only the 11th shot of the game for the Avalanche, who took an early lead on Duchenes 10th goal of the season and went up 2-0 when MacKinnon scored at 12:57.Pastrnak got Boston on the board with a breakaway goal just after getting out of the penalty box, then struck again on a slap shot from above the circles, the 18th goal of the season for Bostons 20-year old rising star.Game notes Avs RW Jarome Iginla played in his 1,499th career game, tying Mike Modano for 16th on the NHL career list. ...
