DURHAM, N.C. -- Luke Kennard is ready for Duke to finally resemble the team that was picked No. 1 in the preseason. The fifth-ranked Blue Devils welcomed two key big men to the rotation -- but also played without two starting guards. With Kennard scoring a career-best 35 points, Duke routed Maine 94-55 on Saturday in the long-awaited debut of freshmen Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden.Im just excited for everybody to get back, Kennard said. Im excited to be a full, healthy team, and just step on the pedal and be who we are going to be during the season.Amile Jefferson added a career-high 20 points and Tatum finished with 10 for the Blue Devils (8-1), who shot 60 percent while playing without a true point guard.Preseason All-America Grayson Allen and freshman Frank Jackson -- their starting backcourt for the past four games -- were held out. Allen has been dealing with a lingering toe injury, while coach Mike Krzyzewski says Jackson has a little bit of a sore foot.Krzyzewski says both players should be back for Tuesday nights game against No. 24 Florida in New York. They certainly didnt need them to rout the struggling Black Bears (2-6).Ilker Er scored all 20 of his points in the first half for Maine. The story of this one was who finally played for Duke, as well as who didnt.Duke has been without three injured five-star freshmen all season, with Tatum out since spraining his foot during an October practice in front of NBA scouts and Bolden sidelined since injuring his leg before the regular season started.Tatum wound up starting and scored his first basket on a banked jumper about 7 minutes in. Bolden was the first man off Dukes bench and his first points came when he stuck back Tatums missed layup with about 7 1/2 minutes until halftime.Tatum played 20 minutes and left after catching a leg cramp in the second half. Bolden logged 12 minutes off the bench and Krzyzewski said he just got tired.I was just happy to be out there -- to rebound, to play defense and to win, Tatum said.BIG PICTUREMaine: As their record might indicate, the Black Bears have some things to sort out, and Cameron Indoor Stadium is a tough place to fix those problems. To their credit, they kept things interesting in the first half while Duke figured out how to play without Allen and Jackson, but they didnt have any answers for Kennard and managed just 23 points in the second half.Everything about them kind of wore us down, coach Bob Walsh said. I thought they took our spirit away in the second half.Duke: Now that two of their injured key players are back, the focus shifts to the two other players who sat this one out. Neither one took part in pregame warmups -- both stood standing next to injured big man Sean Obi on the baseline -- and they were on the bench in their warmup gear throughout.Krzyzewski says Allen has turf toe thats not on the main part, its on the side part and probably needs the extended rest that will come during exam week and over the holidays to approach 100 percent. Duke plays only two games between Dec. 11-30.Krzyzewski said hes just trying to deal with the bottom line that eventually, everybody gets well. ... Just kind of running motion offense here.POLL IMPLICATIONSDuke figures to benefit from a pair of top-five upsets this week -- No. 3 North Carolinas loss at 13th-ranked Indiana, and No. 1 Kentuckys home loss to 11th-ranked UCLA -- and slide up a couple of spots when the new rankings are released Monday.STAT LINEKennard was 11 of 16 from the field, tied a season high with four 3-pointers and was 9 for 9 from the free-throw line. CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Mississippi State coach Ben Howland is done trusting last years film on the NCAAs tallest player, UCF 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall. That kids a lot better than last year, Howland said. And that could be very bad news for the Knights opponents this season.Fall had a career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds in UCFs runaway, 86-61 victory over the Bulldogs at the Charleston Classic on Thursday.Fall, considered a project during his freshman year, was nimble around the basket and dominant when he got the ball -- eight of his 13 made baskets were dunks. He and the Knights made quick work of Mississippi State, taking a 29-point lead in the opening half and never giving up the double-digit margin the rest of the way.I have confidence from coaches and my teammates because they know I can do whats needed for us to win, Fall said.First-year UCF coach Johnny Dawkins was grateful to see Fall on the roster when he came over after eight years at Stanford. Fall has been coachable and eager to improve, Dawkins said. Its a unique opportunity, he said. Tackos made it enjoyable because hes allowed us to coach him as he grows in the game.Fall finished shooting 13 of 17 and added three blocks and an assist as the Knights cruised the victory.Tank Efianayi had 17 points, 15 coming in UCFs big first half as it made 19 of 30 shots to take a 53-33 lead. B.J. Taylor also finished with 17 points for the Knights.Fall choked off any thoughts of a Mississippi State comeback with the first two baskets of the second half, including a gliding one-handed jam as the crowd at TD Arena cheered. He surpassed his previous high of 23 points set against Stetson last December. The Bulldogs could not respond and fell into the losers brackett of the eight-team tournament.ddddddddddddThe Knights will face home-standing College of Charleston on Friday night for a spot in the championship finals.BIG PICTUREMississippi State: The Bulldogs fell into a big hole early and could not dig themselves out. They went nearly seven minutes with just two baskets as UCF built a 29-point lead in the first half. Thats not going to cut it when Southeastern Conference play rolls around.UCF: Theres no bigger picture for the Knights than Tacko Fall, who according to the school is one of the worlds 40 tallest living human beings. Hes also the tallest player in the NCAA and played like it against Mississippi State. Cant see why Fall could not continue this kind of play once UCF begins American Athletic Conference play.TALL PROBLEMSUCFs Fall affected Mississippi States offense as well. Its tallest starter, 6-10 Aric Holman who scored 11 points in the Bulldogs opening win last week, was only 2 of 4 shooting in 28 minutes as he spent much of his time fronting the 7-6 Fall. Schnider Herard, also 6-10, missed both shots he took in 18 minutes and had four fouls subbing in on UCFs biggest player.EFFICIENT PLAYPoint guard B.J. Taylor finished with 17 points, but Dawkins was far more pleased with him handing out 10 assists without turning the ball over in 35 minutes of play. Dawkins, a former All-American point guard for Duke, said Taylor protecting and distributing the ball to the right people will be a big reason for UCFs potential success this year.UP NEXTMississippi State faces Boise State on FridayUCF will play College of Charleston on Friday.
