STARKVILLE, Miss. - Evie Grace Singleton finished her Bulldog career the way she started it on Aug. 28, 2015. Leading the Bulldogs to victory.Behind the impressive play of seniors Singleton and Jazmyne Johnson, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (14-18, 6-12) won back-to-back senior days for the first time since 2005-06, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs (13-18, 1-17), 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14).Singletons 21 kills closed out her final season with 499 kills, the second-highest total in program history. Johnson starred on the defensive side of the ball, tallying her 13th match this season with at least five blocks, as her 8 total closed her career at 136, the fourth-most in school history.I cannot say enough about how proud I am of this team for going out there and getting this win today. Our goal was to send our seniors out on a high note and we did just that, McFatrich said. From Evie to Jaz to everyone in between, we played a solid match from the very beginning. I know this season did not go exactly how we wanted it to, but we ended with a win, sent the seniors out on top and created some momentum heading into the offseason.Senior day opened with MSU winning a tight first set, 25-22. Singleton had a set-high six kills while Johnson, Emily Hill and Jelena Vujcin each had a block to put the home-standing Bulldogs over the top.MSU went in the locker room up 2-0 after winning the second set by another score of 25-22. Singleton added five kills and two blocks to Hills set-high six kills. Johnson was again a force at the net with two more denials. MSU totaled four aces in the set with one each coming from Singleton, Hill, Cheyenne Spell and Riley Duzenack. The Maroon and White Bulldogs came out of the locker room red hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. However, Georgia would fight back and eventually cut MSUs lead to 2-1, taking the third frame by a score of 25-22. Singleton and Hill continued to deal on the offensive end, both tallying five kills. To finish off the season, MSU opened the fourth and final set on a 13-3 run and never looked back, winning 25-14. Johnson had five total blocks to secure the MSU win. Senior Chelsea Duhs landed three kills in her final set as a Bulldog to add to Singletons five and Hills four.Behind Singleton was Hills 20 kills, her second-straight match with 20 kills and third of the season. Blossom Sato tallied her second 50-assist contest in as many matches, closing out her sophomore season with a career-best 968 assists. That total is the most by a Bulldog since Suzanne Horner earned 978 in 2013.MSU starred from the service line yet again this season, tallying its fifth match of the year with at least nine aces. Singletons trio of aces led the way, while Duzenack and Spell each tallied two. http://www.nflcardinalsrookiestore.com/Cardinals-Dj-Humphries-Jersey/ . -- Stanford squashed Oregons national championship hopes again, schooling the Ducks in power football. http://www.nflcardinalsrookiestore.com/Cardinals-Antoine-Bethea-Jersey/ . -- Ty Montgomery had 290 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, and fifth-ranked Stanford held on to beat No. http://www.nflcardinalsrookiestore.com/Cardinals-Tj-Logan-Jersey/ . TORONTO -- Will Power used pit strategy to grab his third victory of the season and close in on Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud in the race for the IndyCar championship.Powers victory Sunday on the temporary road course at Exhibition Place was his third in four races, and he was second last week at Iowa. He has closed the gap on Pagenaud to 47 points in the standings, and the two are tied for the most wins in IndyCar this season. Were definitely closing the gap and weve got to keep pushing, man, the Australian said. If we can close that gap going into (the season finale) Sonoma, we can do this. We can win this championship, absolutely. He noted that Scott Dixon snatched the IndyCar title away from teammate Juan Pablo Montoya last year with a strong late surge all the way through Sonoma. As long as its mathematically possible, you should never give up, Power said. Dixon has been the example of that year after year. He said to me the other day, with six to go, he was 90 back. Just shows you how quickly that can change.Power pitted on Lap 57 of 85 for his final stop of the race and moments later, defending race winner Josef Newgarden crashed when he ran over the curb in Turn 5. It brought out a caution and ruined the race for pole-sitter Scott Dixon, who had dominated up to that point.Because Dixon -- along with Pagenaud and five others -- had yet to pit, they were behind Power and stuck in traffic when they did make their stop.It was a late call, Power said. I couldnt believe I came down pit lane and saw the yellow lights come on. I was so stoked to see yellow lights. Its not often you catch a yellow like that.We ran the top three all day. Had a fast car. Its very difficult to pass, so it was going to be a pit stop sequence if youre gooing to get by anyone, or a restart.ddddddddddddDixon led 56 laps but couldnt recover from having to pit under yellow and finished eighth. His plight earned sympathy from runner-up Helio Castroneves.Sometimes not the fastest car wins the race, said the Brazilian. It makes the level of everyone better. One day its going to play on your side, another day its not going to be on your side.A caution with four laps remaining -- first Jack Hawksworth hit a tire barrier, and in an unrelated incident, Juan Pablo Montoya hit the same barrier -- to set up one final restart with one lap remaining. Power got a great start to pull away from teammate Castroneves to give Penske a 1-2 sweep.Castroneves rallied from an early flat tire to finish second. We are never giving up, especially now, he said. We are not giving up.Toronto native James Hinchcliffe finished third for his first career podium at his home race.As we were coming to the last restart, I saw everyone come to their feet and hoped I didnt screw it up, Hinchcliffe said of the home crowd support.Newgarden crashed to set up the race-deciding pit sequence and finished last in the 22-car field. The American was coming off a dominating victory last week on the oval at Iowa despite a broken right wrist suffered in a crash at Texas in June, and he appeared to aggravate his injury on the contact with the wall on Sunday. The Iowa victory had pushed Newgarden to second in the standings behind Pagenaud, but his frustrating weekend dropped him to fifth in the standings leaving Toronto.Pagenaud finished ninth -- his eighth finish of ninth or better through 11 races this season.
