Heres whats happening around the NHL this week.Anaheim Ducks: After missing two games with an upper-body injury, Rickard Rakell could re-join the Ducks as soon as Friday versus the Sharks. Skating on a top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, the 23-year-old has 10 goals -- including six in his past eight games -- and four assists in 16 contests.Arizona Coyotes: Nearly 30 years old and in the final season of his current contract, Martin Hanzal should (yes, should -- the Coyotes are a point up on dead-last in the league) be on the move before the trade deadline. Theres suggested interest from a gaggle of contending squads:Some of those teams, based on current depth charts, could be Nashville, who could shift players to wing in order to take on Hanzal, and Winnipeg. Other teams like the Rangers, Montreal, St. Louis and San Jose could be in the mix.Goodness know, the Canadiens could use some help down the middle with Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais hurt. Imagine Hanzal on a Habs scoring line with Max Pacioretty and Alexander Radulov. Or in a top-six role in the Big Apple. An underrated fantasy gem when healthy (which admittedly isnt nearly often enough), the big centerman could experience a bump in fantasy value when moved this winter.Boston Bruins: Some are suggesting a trade sending Ryan Spooner to Vancouver would well serve all involved; the Canucks get a coveted young, scoring forward, the Bruins (presumably) net a much-needed defenseman, and Spooner himself earns a fresh shot at a regular top-six role (not the current case in Boston). While this transaction remains speculative at present, fantasy owners should pay mind if it gains steam. Owned in only 12 percent of ESPN leagues, the 24-year-old is has the potential to blossom in fresh surroundings. The Islanders, Hurricanes and Sharks are also believed to be interested in dealing for Spooner.Buffalo Sabres: Is there a goaltending controversy brewing in Buffalo? Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News suggests not yet, but maybe soon. Here are the facts: Anders Nilsson is winning games and Robin Lehner is not. If the Sabres opt to ride the hot victorious hand, well see more of the former and less of the latter. At least for a spell.Calgary Flames: The Flames are winning. And while goaltender Chad Johnson deserves plenty of credit for the running four-game victory streak (7-2-1 in their past 10), the rest of Calgarys squad has done their part. Which means Alex Chiasson is likely to stick a while on a line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett. Owned in approximately one percent of ESPN leagues -- and an uber-bargain in DFS play -- Chiasson has three goals and four assists in seven games.Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes may be one point out of last place in the Eastern Conference, but that doesnt mean they make for easy opposition. First of all, Cam Ward has been excellent, keeping his modest offensive club in games more often than not. Also, Carolinas penalty kill is outstanding. As in, tops in the league by a good leap (91.7 percent). Food for fantasy thought when looking at matchups in daily lineup leagues or DFS.Chicago Blackhawks: The Blackhawks expect to have an injured Jonathan Toews back for their upcoming spin through New York (taking on the Rangers and Islanders). If possible, bench the Blackhawks captain until then (Dec. 13).Colorado Avalanche: Even though he missed his first scheduled full-contact practice Wednesday because of an unrelated illness, Gabriel Landeskog is still considered a maybe for Thursdays tilt in Boston. Colorados captain has sat out nine straight games with a lower-body injury. Once able to compete, Landeskog should quickly reclaim his top-line role, booting Rene Bourque back to the bottom six.Columbus Blue Jackets: After tallying 30 goals and 19 assists last season, Boone Jenner is proving to be a large disappointment thus far through 2016-17. Four goals and four assists in 24 games is a big drop-off, to be sure, and Jenners fantasy owners are undoubtedly frustrated. However, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch suggests we might want to give the 23-year-old power forward a minute to relax and work it out:Two points: He was minus-6 in his first three games, so hes plus two in the last 21 ... progress! Also, hes scored goals in two of his last three games and has shown signs of defrost offensively. Weve asked him if the 30-goal output last season has led to him putting too much pressure on himself to score. He says no. Heres what I think: I dont think hes ever felt pressure to score, and now its there, if only to prove last wasnt a fluke or his high-water mark. He just needs to play. Hes such a good player and such an impactful player, but his offense comes from his work ethic. That has to be present.The two recent goals are comforting, as is his regular gig in the Blue Jackets top six. Keep the faith!Dallas Stars: There appears to be a light at the end of the mysterious illness tunnel for Jiri Hudler. Owned in nine percent of ESPN leagues, Hudler could return for a Stars club desperate for top-six/power-play help on the right side, especially with Ales Hemsky out long term.Detroit Red Wings: After a two-week absence, Jimmy Howard (groin) has been activated off of IR. Great news for the Red Wings; not so much for some fantasy owners. While Petr Mrazek has taken advantage of Howards shelving by getting his own goaltending act together, Detroits so-called backup was outstanding before getting hurt (including a 1.82 goals-against average and .940 save percentage in 11 starts). This sets up a lively battle for playing time between the pipes, and a return to the headaches such a timeshare causes for fantasy owners.Edmonton Oilers: Attention dynasty-league owners: Whether Jesse Puljujarvi remains stifled in a limited, bottom-six role in Edmonton, or escapes, temporarily loaned out to represent Finland at the IIHF World Junior Championship, he merits shelving for the foreseeable future. But be patient; this talented 18-year-old should pay out handsome fantasy dividends for years to come.Florida Panthers: As promised, Aleksander Barkov and Aaron Ekblad are seeing more ice time under interim head coach Tom Rowe. For whatever reason, the young forward has responded particularly well to the change behind the bench, scoring a goal in three of his past four games, while accumulating 19 shots. If the 21-year-old center is somehow available in your league -- his ownership percentage is somehow just 82.3 percent -- pick him up. This seasons productive funk finally feels over, and his rise to stardom continues.Los Angeles Kings: Despite some solid play from Peter Budaj while Jonathan Quick remains out long-term, the trade chatter out of Los Angeles hasnt quieted down altogether. However, Maple Leaf Jhonas Enroth passed through waivers unclaimed this week, and Karri Ramo signed a professional tryout with an organization other than the Kings (see again: Leafs). Clearly, L.A. management hardly feels desperate. And the latest high-quality relief performance from No. 2 Jeff Zatkoff must offer additional confidence.Montreal Canadiens: With Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais sidelined long-term, the Canadiens are in obvious need for help at center; Tomas Plekanec can only play so much. As discussed above, Arizonas Martin Hanzal appears as one potential trade target, while a disenchanted Alex Burmistrov would undoubtedly welcome the chance to depart Winnipeg. Recurrently out of favor with the Jets, the 25-year-old former eighth-overall draft selection (2010) could only benefit from a fresh start.Minnesota Wild: Spoken for in only a quarter of ESPN leagues, forward Nino Niederreiter presents as a tempting buy-low asset this early December. He collected three goals and four assists in eight recent games, which makes up one part of the argument; the other stems from a deeper dive into advanced statistics:Take this season: Entering Wednesdays game against the Maple Leafs, according to corsica.hockey, Niederreiter led the Wild in Corsi (shot attempt differential while at 5-on-5, a possession measure) at 55.7, in goals for percentage at 57.92 (30th among NHL forwards) and was fifth in scoring chance percentage at 58.33. With three goals, an assist and eighteen shots in four games, and based on his current position, Fiala merits consideration in deeper fantasy leagues.New Jersey Devils: Backup netminder Keith Kinkaid has been tapped to start Friday against the Blues. In limited action behind Cory Schneider, Kinkaid is 3-1-2, with a 2.59 goals-against average and .928 save percentage this campaign. Consider giving the 27-year-old a whirl in DFS competition.New York Islanders: After an ugly November, the Islanders are finally showing signs of life (going 4-0-1 in their past five), led by the top forward pairing of John Tavares and Josh Bailey. The versatile Bailey has been extra impressive, riding a six-game point streak, with two goals and six helpers in his past eight matches. So why is he still available in 83 percent of ESPN leagues?New York Rangers: Checking in with the Rangers infirmary, Rick Nash (groin) is shelved for the week, Jimmy Vesey (upper-body) is pegged to miss a game or two, and Pavel Buchnevich is out a while yet. As such, a J.T. Miller/Kevin Hayes/Michael Grabner reunion might not be out of the question for Thursdays contest in Winnipeg. If so, remember that trio enjoyed some exceptionally productive moments earlier this season; pounce accordingly.Ottawa Senators: While Craig Anderson remains out (personal), Mike Condon is the go-to netminder for the Senators. Owned in only 16 percent of ESPN leagues, the Ottawa backup launched this weeks swing through California with a dominating 35-save win over the Sharks. And hes been consistent altogether. Unless theres an unanticipated change in plan ahead of Saturdays tilt in Los Angeles, Condon could serve as a valuable asset in both season-long and DFS.Philadelphia Flyers: Placed on IR with an upper-body injury, Matt Read isnt expected back until sometime in January. The handful of fantasy owners still invested in the depth forward might take this opportunity to cut him loose altogether. Read has all of three assists in his past 15 games.Pittsburgh Penguins: As anticipated, rookie Jake Guentzel has been reassigned to the AHL. The 22-year-old scored three goals and an assist in five games, in no small part to his role alongside center Evgeni Malkin. Although fantasy-irrelevant for now, Guentzel could resurface as a factor in his next NHL go-around.San Jose Sharks: Backup netminder Aaron Dell has been superb in three of four appearances for San Jose this season, his two most recent performances his best. Its worth bringing up, since the Sharks face a back-to-back set this Friday and Saturday, on the road against the Ducks then at home versus Carolina. Dell stooped all but one of 33 shots against the Hurricanes in mid-November.St. Louis Blues: Goalie Jake Allen is slated to face the visiting Islanders in St. Louis Thursday. Two related, noteworthy bits: Allen has won eight straight games for the Blues. And although theyve strung together a few better results of late, the Islanders have been generally atrocious on the road (2-6-1) this season. If you want a safe play in goal in DFS, Allen could be your guy.Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning anticipate having Ryan Callahan back in the lineup Thursday after a four-game absence. By no means a fantasy heavyweight, the veteran winger is expected to inject a bit of life into a lineup that has struggled to put the puck in the net. Jonathan Drouin (undisclosed) is also due back after sitting out a single game.Toronto Maple Leafs: Lets all quit with the hysterical hand-wringing in regards to William Nylanders so-labelled demotion to the Maple Leafs fourth line. As sanely outlined by Sportsnets Luke Fox, the gifted 20-year-old is enjoying a significantly greater share of ice time than your typical fourth-liner:[Coach Mike] Babcock made a point of calling attention to Nylanders ice time. Due to steady power-play looks and the odd bump-up shift with Matthews, the 19:30 Nylander skated in Calgary last Wednesday and 17:01 in Vancouver Saturday are above his 16:11 seasonal average.So he starts on the fourth line and is promoted throughout the game. Fine. Also, as soon as winger Connor Brown falls out of Babcocks favor within the Leafs top six, Nylander is likely to rejoin center Auston Matthews full-time.Vancouver Canucks: Were getting to that point where the Ryan Miller trade talk is only going to increase in volume. The Canucks arent threatening to make much of a charge. The necessity of rebuilding with youth is becoming all the more evident in Vancouver. Miller is in the final year of his contract. Other -- contending -- NHL clubs could use some help between the pipes. Makes sense, yes? Fact is, the 36-year-old has been playing fairly well. A change of scenery could do wonders for his fantasy value.Washington Capitals: If 21-year-old Andre Burakovsky isnt sweating his sludgy start to 2016-17, why should we?I dont think its my game thats bad, Burakovsky said. The points are just not really there for me. At this point last year, I wasnt playing good. Thats a difference. This year, I actually think Im playing good.
