TORONTO -- For decades, Dave Keon wanted no part of the Toronto Maple Leafs. On Friday, he was honored as the greatest player in the teams 100-year history.Syl Apps was second on the list , followed by Ted Kennedy, Darryl Sittler, Mats Sundin, Tim Horton, Johnny Bower, Borje Salming amd Frank Maholvlich and Turk Broda.Keon won four Stanley Cups with Toronto and remains the only player in team history to capture the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP.Obviously, winning Stanley Cups certainly helps your popularity, Keon said following a ceremony announcing the results. Im sure that had something to do with it.Keons rift with the Leafs stemmed from years of perceived mistreatment, including the clubs unwillingness to retire his No. 14 sweater.Leafs President Brendan Shanahan said it took only a phone call for Keon to accept an invitation to the event. He also felt Keon appreciated a gesture from coach Mike Babcock, who brought the teams former captain into the dressing room at one point last season.I think he wanted to come back, Shanahan said about the 76-year-old Keon. I think he wanted to be a part of this. I think he likes the direction that were going. The list was compiled by a 31-member voting committee as well as fans, 300,000 according to Shanahan.Shanahan, a Toronto area native, said his favorite Leaf growing up was Sittler, who ranks second behind Sundin on the career scoring list. He thought Keon, the third-leading scorer in franchise history, was an appropriate choice though and a good indication of the appreciation he still enjoyed from fans.Keon won the clubs first and only Conn Smythe trophy in 1967 (the award didnt exist until 1965) and a Calder Trophy as the leagues top rookie in 1961. He had 365 goals and 858 points in 1062 games for Toronto, third behind Sundin and Sittler in both categories.Keon jumped to Minnesota in the World Hockey Association in 1975 and ended up back in the NHL with Hartford in 1979-80. He played his last season in 1981-82 at age 41, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986.He returned to the Toronto organization in public outings only in the past decade when past Cup-winning teams were honored.A member of the last Toronto club to win the Stanley Cup, Keon said he hoped todays group would embrace the challenge of getting back there one day.Its going to take a little while, Keon said, but it seems theyre getting the right players. Pierce has been a quarterback who moves and while it has cost him -- injuries have sidelined him for large chunks of his career -- trying to keep him in a bubble hasnt worked so well either this season. Winnipeg currently sits at 1-2, although so does every other team in the CFL East. "Were going to rectify that a little bit this week in our game plan," Burke said of the way Pierce has been held in check. "When he has done some positive things this year hes extended things with his feet and so I think youll see a little bit more wide open Buck Pierce this week." It also hasnt been much of a bubble. Pierce was sacked six times in his last outing alone, although Burke points out hes also healthier at this point in the season that he has been in some time. "Hes going to have to be smart about taking hits. Hes just going to have to get down on the ground when he needs to." Keeping Pierce healthy was one of the keys to Winnipegs plan for success this season but so far the offence hasnt managed to generate enough points to suggest it was the only fix needed. Burke has trotted out a pretty long list of problems from receivers who dont move as ordered to an offensive line that isnt learning from its mistakes. Then there are penalties Burke says are just plain dumb, such as offsides on kicks. Burke wasnt ready Tuesday to announce any of the roster moves he has already suggested might happen to try and fix some of these problems, but says he will be ready Wednesday. "You have to learn from your mistakes," agrees Pierce. "Were all professionals here and we learn and we move on." He said a successful offence is all about execution and everyone doing their jobs and admits even he hasnt done his as well as he should. "Im not doiing what I need to do to put our team in a position to be successful," he said.dddddddddddd "I missed some throws that I usually dont miss. Those things are going to happen, you just cant have them happen all the time." And he too said taking off the leash would be a good idea. "Obviously my strength is me moving around and running," he said, "so hopefully well see more of that this week." Meanwhile, after coming away battered and bruised from their 25-20 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last weekend, the Bombers are getting defensive back Johnny Sears into the lineup again. Hell replace Desia Dunn, out for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury. Sears remembers his last game at the old Ivor Wynne Stadium last year, before he got injured. Now hes eager to get back on the field in his first start since then, when the Toronto Argonauts visit Friday. And, if anything, he says his trademark aggressive approach is going to be intensified. "Oh yeah, I think now its more, because Ive been out for so long, he said after practice Tuesday. "My last game wasnt even a home game, it was an away game, and it was the end of the season." It was the end of an unpleasant 6-12 season for the Bombers, who finished out of the playoffs. They got off to a slow start in 2012 and never really recovered. Sears was also reunited this year with defensive co-ordinator Casey Creehan, who he knew when both we at Eastern Michigan, Sears as a player and Creehan as one of their defensive coaches. "He wasnt my position coach . . . but weve got a great rapport with each other," said Sears. "He hasnt changed one bit, still high intensity . . . He makes sure we practice the way we want to play," he said. "Hes a player without the pads." Creehans defence has been the one anchor the Bombers have been able to rely on this season as they struggle to stay in games offensively. ' ' '
