SAN DIEGO -- Ian Kennedy had a winning debut with the Padres even as San Diego braced for the expected loss of shortstop Everth Cabrera to a 50-game suspension in baseballs latest drug scandal. Kennedy earned his first victory in more than two months and Everth Cabrera had two hits and two RBIS as the Padres beat the New York Yankees 6-3 on Sunday. The Padres took two of three from the Yankees, who got only 2 2-3 innings out of Phil Hughes. Kennedy was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. He was 0-5 with a 5.82 ERA in his last 10 starts with Arizona He hadnt won since June 1 at the Chicago Cubs. "The adrenaline got the best of me later on, but early on I started feeling it, trying to control it," Kennedy said. "A lot of things going on. First start, against the team that drafted me, it was a lot into it, coming over here. I got the first one out of the way and the offence carried me." Kennedy (4-8) was taken by the Yankees in the first round of the June 2006 draft. He was traded to Arizona in December 2009. Kennedy faltered in the sixth, allowing consecutive two-out walks to Robinson Cano and Alfonso Soriano followed by RBI singles by Curtis Granderson and Lyle Overbay. That was it for Kennedy, who allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out six and walked four. Manager Bud Black said he thought Kennedy pitched well. "Anytime you come to a new team theres emotion and theres quite a bit of adrenaline, and I think at the end he sort of ran out of it a little bit. I think he tired a little bit quicker than what youll see in the future. I think thats what happened there in the sixth inning. "Again, for him, its been three days of a lot of emotions, getting traded and coming to a new club," Black said. "I thought he handled it well. I liked what I saw. I told him thats going to be one of many wins for the Padres." Kennedy said he welcomed the fresh start. "Coming here, within the division is a little bit different because Ive faced these guys I dont know how many times over the years," Kennedy said. "But you get a different perspective from the pitching coach, or video guys, the manager, just a little different. I like it." Cabrera, the Padres All-Star shortstop, is among 14 players facing discipline in the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic. Major League Baseball appears poised to levy suspensions Monday. Yankees All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez is another of the players set to face discipline. Major League Baseball has informed New York that Rodriguez will be suspended Monday in the Biogenesis drug case, but can play while he appeals the penalty, a person familiar with deliberations told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was authorized. "I want him back with us. This is arguably one of the best hitters of all-time," Granderson said. "Having him in the lineup is obviously going to be very positive for us." Rodriguez is set to make his season debut when the Yankees play the Chicago White Sox. Cabrera singled in two runs with two outs in the three-run second before getting thrown out trying to steal second. He leads the NL and is second in the majors with 37 steals. He doubled leading off the fourth, advanced on Alexi Amaristas groundout and scored on Chase Headleys single to give the Padres a 6-0 lead. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances. Yankees rookie catcher Austin Romine hit his first career homer, a solo shot into the Padres bullpen beyond the centre field fence off Dale Thayer with one out in the seventh. Hughes (4-10) had his second-shortest outing of the season, allowing five runs and six hits while striking out one and walking one. "He couldnt put people away," manager Joe Girardi said. "The bottom line is, he didnt make pitches when he had to." Hughes, whos 0-3 in his last five starts, agreed. "I blew an opportunity there in the second to get an out, two outs, and it comes down to not making quality pitches when I had to," he said. "There were runners in scoring position and a lot of long counts and just a battle the entire time. Unfortunately, I wasnt able to execute a couple of big pitches with two outs." The Southern California native got through the first inning unscathed but was roughed up in the second and third innings. He allowed singles to Will Venable and Chris Denorfia opening the second before Mark Kotsay hit a sacrifice fly. He then walked Nick Hundley before Kennedy sacrificed ahead of Cabreras two-run single. Hughes again put on the first two batters in the third, allowing a single to Amarista and walking Headley, and again, both scored. Denorfia hit a sacrifice fly and Kotsay hit an RBI single with two outs. The Yankees are a season-worst 9 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East and 4 1/2 out in the race for the second wild-card spot. The 1984 team gave up 455 yards in the AFC championship game and 537 in the Super Bowl, a collapse even Dan Marino couldnt overcome as Miami lost the title game. The Dolphins defense hasnt retreated so furiously since -- until now. Coordinator Vance Josephs unit has allowed season-high yardage totals (475 and 496) each of the past two games, the latter a 38-6 loss at Baltimore. The last two weeks we havent played well, Joseph said Thursday. Its Week 13. What weve done well for the last month and a half is on tape. Everyone is making adjustments, so we have to make an adjustment now and help our guys more.A dramatic turnaround will be necessary Sunday if Miami (7-5) is to beat the explosive Arizona Cardinals (5-6-1).The defense appeared upgraded during a six-game winning streak in October and November, but the Dolphins rankings have been in freefall the past two weeks. Theyre now 25th in yards allowed and 30th against the run.Pass defense has been the biggest problem lately. San Franciscos Colin Kaepernick threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns against Miami in Week 12, and Joe Flacco threw for 381 yards and four scores last week.Flacco and the Ravens did most of their damage in the middle of the field, exposing weaknesses in pass coverage by an injury-depleted linebacker corps. We were trying to play tight coverage, and it wasnt happening, Joseph said. We were soft across the middle. Joe got hot, and we couldnt stop it. We couldnt cover them. We couldnt chase them. We played zone; it was too soft. We played man; we couldnt chase them. It wasnt good.Carson Palmer is sure to test the Dolphins the same way with throws too Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, who leads all running backs in receptions (64) and receiving yards (704), and leads the NFL in scrimmage yards.dddddddddddd.Our defense has to make sure we dont let Johnson take complete control of this game, Miami coach Adam Gase said. If we let him get going, thats a recipe for disaster for us.Another worry is the 6-foot-3, 218-pound Fitzgerald in the slot. Cameron Wake, the Dolphins 263-pound defensive end, happened to walk past as Joseph was discussing the challenge of covering Fitzgerald over the middle.I can play nickel, Wake said.Hes your size, so maybe, Joseph responded. With Kiko Alonso nursing hamstring and thumb injuries, the Dolphins might be forced to start backups at all three linebacker spots. Theyve also been without two starters in the secondary, making the season -- especially the Ravens game -- an education for young replacements. We can learn a lot from that, and I think we will, veteran cornerback Byron Maxwell said. Weve got a lot of smart guys on this team, and they want to get better. Its going to be better next time.Joseph has been known to shake up the lineup, but said hes not planning any changes this week. Effort hasnt been an issue, he said, and his main complaint has involved self-inflicted damage. As one example, he noted a third-and-15 play where the Ravens took advantage of a mental mistake.Lets be more detailed, he said. Lets get back to doing it right, and then we can see how we fare.
