WIMBLEDON -- Three hours before Fridays Centre Court match, Juan Martin del Potro strolled through the deserted grounds. On his way to the practice courts, the 6-foot-6 Argentine laughed with two members of his team, waggling his plastic-wrapped racket with his left hand.He didnt seem to have a care in the world. In truth, no current player with his extraordinary skill set has suffered more heartache as a result of his own fragile body.Since winning the US Open seven years ago, del Potro has endured no fewer than four surgeries on his left and right wrists. It has been three years since he last played here, reaching the 2013 semifinals at the All England Club.Im enjoying tennis again, del Potro said after winning his first match earlier this week. Im starting to talk about tennis and no more about my wrist. Thats important.Incredibly, with very little ramp-up, del Potros wrist and tennis are both officially top-10 ready. He scorched/stunned/slammed No. 4 seed Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3 to advance to the third round. Wawrinka is the highest seed to exit the mens tournament thus far.To say he is ahead of schedule would be a gross understatement.Del Potros hands were still shaking when he stepped off the court and into the BBC interview area. He called it his most emotional victory ever.It feels amazing sensation for me at the moment, del Potro said with feeling. I beat one of the guys whos playing great tennis. I couldnt expect this victory today. I am very, very happy. It was a delicious and uncommon second-round matchup between two former Grand Slam champions, given del Potros layoff-induced ATP ranking of No. 165. While Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have monopolized the majors, winning 43 singles titles, these are two of the other four active players to experience a Slam victory.Del Potros formidable right-handed forehand -- the one that unstrung Federer in that 2009 US Open final -- can still be, quite literally, breathtaking. In a first-round match against Stephane Robert, del Potros first Grand Slam appearance in 29 months, it sometimes drew gasps from the knowledgeable crowd on Court 12.Del Potros flat, two-handed backhand was once one of the games best. Now, it is a ghost, a drastically reduced one-handed shot that is invariably sliced. There are times when, under duress, he instinctively uses both hands, but you can feel his hesitation, his fear of a relapse.Im not having all my confidence on my backhands yet, he allowed. And thats tough when you play against the top guys because they are so good players and they are strong enough to play in the fifth set matches. Im expecting be better in the future, but for this year, my biggest challenge could be finish healthy and ready to make a good preparation for the next year.Against Wawrinka, del Potros serve and the forehand were in vintage form. Forty percent of del Potros serves were unreturnable. His fastest serve: 135 mph. In two matches, he has hit 26 forehand winners -- against only one on the backhand side.As we all said, its great for the tennis to see him back, a disconsolate Wawrinka said in his postmatch news conference. You see already, he beat some good players. His backhand is still struggling because he cannot play completely, but on this grass the slice is still difficult. In the first set, he squandered two break-point opportunities but converted one of two in the second. In the third, he played a pristine tiebreaker, while Wawrinka melted down, throwing in a double fault and a bad forehand error at the end. After my third surgery, I was really sad, sitting at home, del Potro said. This is like my second or third career in my life, and now I am enjoying. Its a great sensation for me, and I feel alive.I could not expect to be in third round of Wimbledon after three years. And now to the end [of the tournament], everything is very positive. I am in a good way to be[ing] 100 percent.Del Potro slipped and fell near the end of the first set and stayed down along the baseline for a minute or so. Slowly unspooling his long body, he gingerly got to his feet. Thats how most people thought it was going to be this year for del Potro.Rather, this result is a bolt of lightning for mens tennis. If he can beat a two-time major champion with one hand tied behind his back, what will he do with two healthy hands? At 27, del Potro is still relatively young; Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam, the 2014 Australian Open, two months shy of his 29th birthday and his second, last years French Open, at 30.For now, he will continue to fight the urge to be aggressive.I believe on myself, I believe on my wrist, del Potro said. I would like to get better faster than Im doing now, but that could be dangerous for my body. Im working hard mentally, too, because I have to deal with some pains and some frustrations when I want to hit a good backhands and I cannot do it.I hope to be ready for being aggressive player on next season.Jason Witten Womens Jersey . His .522 slugging percentage ranks in the top 30.Duvall, 27, has square shoulders, a square jaw and thick arms, and he weighs about 225 pounds. He stands 6-foot-1 but looks taller in the on-deck circle. Of the five traditional tools in baseball, Duvalls meal ticket is power. It has earned him a coveted everyday job on the Cincinnati Reds, batting behind Joey Votto.Duvalls power prompted the league to select him for the Home Run Derby in San Diego. There, he helped put on an entertaining show, filling the outfield stands with baseballs, along with Giancarlo Stanton and the games other notable sluggers.Yet it was a lack of strength that alerted Duvall to a serious illness four years ago. Gone untreated, it could have put him in a coma or even taken his life. The Reds left fielder has Type 1 diabetes. Every time he steps on a major league field, he has a quarter-sized glucose meter stuck somewhere on his body. He moves it every six days to find fresh insertion sites. Another needle inserted in his skin is connected to an insulin pump that he stashes in his back pocket. The tiny computer, protected by the same plastic that makes up bicycle helmets, is battered from a couple of years of sliding on it. The devices are connected via Bluetooth technology. They are his lifelines.A Type 1 diabetic has an immune system that attacks certain cells in the pancreas, and as a result, the pancreas no longer produces insulin, the hormone that controls blood glucose levels. If Duvall were to give himself too much insulin or skip a meal at the wrong time, he could lose consciousness, have a seizure or even die. There are instances of people getting low overnight who dont sense it, said Washington University endocrinologist Cynthia Herrick. They dont wake up.Duvall is playing a higher-stakes game than virtually any other major leaguer. His ability to regulate his blood sugar is crucial to his ability to have the necessary energy to play the game and the required alertness to succeed. Like everything else in baseball, Duvalls condition gets sized and fitted for the games jocular culture.I know its super-serious, but we kind of mess with him because hes having a great year, teammate Tyler Holt said. Every time he hits a home run or does something well, I joke with him, Whatd you give yourself, a couple of extra pumps to get you going a little more?In December 2011, Duvall was puzzled that he was waking up five or six times a night to urinate. The following month, weightlifting became unbearable. He felt weak much of the time. He sometimes became lightheaded. By the time he got to minor league spring training with the San Francisco Giants, he estimates he had lost 20 pounds.During a game that March, he felt so lightheaded he had to come off the field. The trainer gave me some orange juice, and I started to feel better, Duvall said. We hadnt gotten the tests back, but all the signs were there. Most people are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes -- sometimes called juvenile diabetes -- by the time they are 20. Duvall was 23. At the time, he was entering high Class-A baseball and was older than many of his teammates, and thus anxious not to lose time adjusting to a different regimen. So when the dooctor informed him he was diabetic, he took it surprisingly in stride.ddddddddddddIt wasnt a huge ordeal just because I really just wanted to find out what was going on, he said. When I found out, I took a deep breath and was like, OK, where do we go, what do we do now, and just take care of it.St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dean Kiekhefer was a teammate of Duvalls on a traveling AAU team based in Louisville, Kentucky. They were in the fourth grade. They have kept in touch ever since.Hes a really good dude. Hes kind of quiet, keeps to himself, goes about his business and works hard, Kiekhefer said. The only thing I thought was crazy was that when we were growing up, he was an unbelievable shortstop. I thought he would be a major league shortstop. Now hes playing the outfield, and it just shows the work ethic and talent he has.Kiekhefer said he has encountered players in the minor leagues who carry insulin pumps in their back pockets.Who knows if 20 years ago theyd have been able to play, he said. They might have had to run off the field all of a sudden. When Hall of Famer Ron Santo was playing for the Chicago Cubs 50 years ago, he concealed his Type 1 diabetes, worried that he would be forced into retirement if he was found out. He gauged his blood sugar by his mood, snacking on a candy bar if he felt low. Until the advent of insulin pumps, Type 1 diabetics had to administer insulin shots to themselves at least three times a day, usually before meals.Although Santo was diagnosed at 18, he didnt reveal the struggle until he was close to retirement. Santo had each of his legs amputated below the knee, one in 2001 and the other in 2002. He died in 2010 at 70. Insulin pumps were invented in 1976, two years after Santo retired. It probably was a lot harder, Herrick said. The thing about the pump is it allows us to do a lot more fine-tuning of the insulin regimen people are on.The most common form of diabetes, Type 2, is a condition in which a persons body does not process insulin properly. It is associated with obesity and lack of exercise as well as other factors. Cardinals Hall of Famer Lou Brock was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 17 years ago and had his left leg amputated below the knee last fall.Duvall has done volunteer work with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation both in San Francisco and southern Ohio. Its an exciting time in diabetes research, according to Herrick. Engineers have designed pumps in trial stages that are capable of monitoring glucose levels and then infusing either insulin or glucogon, the counterbalancing hormone. The pumps act as an artificial pancreas outside the body. Other researchers are exploring ways of using stem cells to differentiate into the kinds of cells that can replace those destroyed by antibodies in a Type 1 diabetics pancreas.Duvall monitors the research from afar via contacts with the JDRF. Hes hoping before long to have one of the more advanced pumps to help simplify his regimen. Like most athletes, he is always searching for the latest and greatest breakthroughs in performance technology. In this case, it simply helps him stay on the field. The rest of it, including the prodigious power, is up to him. ' ' '
