DENVER -- Tyler Chatwood pitched his way out of trouble sometimes and got some help from his defence at other moments, too. It all added up to a successful return from injury for the Colorado Rockies starter on Saturday. Chatwood pitched five effective innings in his first outing since a recent triceps injury, Tyler Colvin homered during Colorados six-run first, and the Rockies snapped a three-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. The Rockies also relied on solid defence to end a six-game skid against the Phillies. They turned three double plays and got a gem from third baseman Nolan Arenado, who snared Jonathan Pettibones sharply hit grounder in the second with a diving stop and made a one-hop throw from his backside to get the Phillies pitcher. In the first inning, one out after Michael Youngs RBI single, left fielder Carlos Gonzalez also threw out Young at the plate as he tried to score on Ryan Howards double. "That was pretty special," Chatwood said of Arenados defensive gem. "That might have saved a run, and CarGo definitely saved a run, throwing out a guy from the wall. Our defence has been good all year and it definitely helped me out of some jams." Chatwood induced a double-play grounder in the fourth, after allowing a leadoff walk, and another in the fifth after successive singles to start the inning. Chatwood said he used his two-seam fastball to get both grounders. "I thought Chat did an outstanding job," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "What I really liked is when he got in trouble, he got the double-play ball. I think hes really focused on doing that this year. Thats been his approach in those situations and hes been able to get it done." Wilin Rosario had three hits, all for extra bases, Arenado was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Chatwood pitched in with two hits, including an RBI single. But it was Arenados remarkable stop and throw from the ground to nail Pettibone that resonated after the game, even with the Phillies. "I wanted to snap something that way," Pettibone said. "Its going to be on Top Ten. Hes a good player. You just tip your cap." Arenado was more understated in describing his stellar play. "I was just able to make a dive," he said. "It was just reaction. I got the ball, and from an angle I just threw it, tried to get the ball out of my hand as quick as I could. Luckily (Jordan) Pacheco made a great scoop." Chatwood (4-1) also had a pretty good day at the plate. He boosted his average to .437 (7 for 16) with 5 RBIs in his first game since June 3, when he left after four innings at Cincinnati because of right triceps soreness. He missed one start before Saturdays outing when he allowed two runs and seven hits. Pettibone (3-3) was hit hard from the outset and left after three innings, his shortest outing of the season. Winless in six starts, Pettibone gave up 10 hits and seven runs, including six in the first when the Rockies sent 10 batters to the plate and matched their highest-scoring inning of the season. "He had a rough time there," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "They hit some balls good off him. We cant get CarGo out. The catcher, we kept feeding him balls over the plate, and he kept smoking them to the same place. Things kind of snowballed, we got a little sloppy. "We gave them outs, and you cant do that. Especially in this ballpark. Theyll burn you because theyve got a good team." The Phillies took a 1-0 lead on Michael Youngs RBI single but the Rockies strung together six consecutive hits in the bottom of the first, including a run-scoring single by Michael Cuddyer, an RBI double by Gonzalez, an RBI triple by Rosario, and a two-run homer by Colvin. Colorado extended its lead to 10-2 with three runs in the fourth. The Rockies turned it into a rout with run-scoring singles from Arenado and Chatwood and an RBI double from Rosario. The Phillies added three runs in the eighth on Ryan Howards RBI double and John Mayberrys two-run homer off Chris Volstad. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The past three years, the Kansas City Royals had the best and most feared bullpen in the majors. If the Royals held the lead after six innings, the shutdown bullpen could be counted on to hold it the final three innings. It included Greg Holland, Wade Davis, Kelvin Herrera and Luke Hochevar. But that bullpen is no longer. Holland had Tommy John surgery last September and hasnt thrown a pitch this year. Hochevar had surgery for Thoracic outlet syndrome. Davis has been on the disabled list twice this year with a forearm strain. Only Herrera has been healthy the entire season.Youre dealt a hand of cards. You play those cards, Royals manager Ned Yost said. In the past, we had a really, really good idea what we were going to get coming out of the bullpen. Last year, we knew what we were going to get with Holly, with Wade, with Hoch, with Herrera. Were in a situation now through injuries, were not the same bullpen we were last year. Jacks (Joakim Soria) had great outings and hes had bad outings. You get into a situation and you pretty much understand what youre going to get from Kelvin. Wades been through some issues. Youre hoping when he goes out, hes going to be good, but with everybody else youre not sure what youre going to get.The Oakland Athletics bullpen has outperformed the Royals bullpen in winning the first three games of this series. As relievers John Axford, Liam Hendriks and Chris Smith held the Royals to one single over the final four innings in an 8-0 shutout Wednesday.dddddddddddd.Our bullpen is really a strength for us, As manager Bob Melvin said. The As bullpen is 2-0 with a save while allowing Kansas City one run on a balk and five hits over 12 1/3 innings in the first three games of this series. The As started five rookies, including left-hander and winning pitcher Sean Manaea, for the second straight game against the defending World Series champion Royals. We seem to be getting an infusion of intensity with these younger guys, Melvin said. These guys are hungry to make a name for themselves. The As will start rookie right-hander Daniel Mengden for the series finale Thursday, but he has had limited success in the majors this year. He is 0-4 with a 9.39 ERA and opponents hitting .328 off him in his past seven starts after going 1/3 with a 2.81 ERA in June and holding opposing batters to a .221 average. This will be his first time to face the Royals. The Royals will counter with veteran right-hander Edinson Volquez, who has won his past three decisions over the As, including an April 15 victory at Oakland.Volquez is unbeaten in his past seven starts, but that is a deceiving statistic. He is 2-0 with a 5.45 ERA and five no-decisions in that stretch. In his previous start Saturday at Chicago, Volquez surrendered four runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings, but the Royals rallied to top the White Sox 6-5. ' ' '
