Derek Brunson was in a hurry to find out what Robert Whittaker was made of Saturday night in a pairing of red-hot UFC middleweights. He got his answer soon enough.Whittaker (17-4) fought through a relentless amount of pressure early on and finished Brunson by first-round TKO in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Melbourne, Australia.A native of New Zealand who was raised in Australia, Whittaker sent the partisan crowd at Rod Laver Arena home on a high note by winning his sixth straight bout, improving to 5-0 since moving up to middleweight two years ago.Referee Herb Dean waved off the bout at the 4:07 mark as Whittaker rained down clean punches with Brunson on his back.Me and my coaching staff got together, and we had a solid game plan, Whittaker said. We knew he was going to come out tough, but I had no idea he was going to come out that hard.Brunson (16-4) pushed the pace from the beginning in a style that bordered on reckless. He routinely backed Whittaker up to the cage and appeared to briefly hurt him with lunging jabs and looping power shots. But Whittaker, 25, repeatedly stuffed Brunsons takedown attempts and stayed poised within the chaos.I knew I had to weather the storm. He was a heavy hitter, Whittaker said. I tried to duck and weave as much as I could. I stuck to the game plan, I stuck to my setup. I ended up circling out and working through his weakness. As Whittaker continued to backpedal in the face of Brunsons pressure, he also found his range and began to slow down Brunson, 32, with uppercuts and stiff jabs. Soon enough, Brunsons aggressiveness began to work against him.The bout turned in Whittakers favor for good when he caught Brunson lunging forward with a short counter left hook that wobbled his legs and incited the Melbourne crowd. Whittaker followed with uppercuts, causing Brunson to close his swollen right eye.Whittaker quickly closed the distance and put away Brunson for good with a perfect combination of a left jab followed by a right kick to the head that badly hurt Brunson. A flurry of follow-up punches sent Brunson to the ground before Whittaker forced the stoppage with hammer punches.[Brunson] hits hard, very hard. His other opponents will testify to that, Whittaker said. But I hit hard, too. Im just as fast, and Im just as strong. If you come at me with holes in your plan, Im going to take it from you.The loss snapped a five-fight winning streak for Brunson, who was 7-1 in the UFC entering the bout. Whittaker, meanwhile, hopes to take a significant step forward in competition following the victory.Ive been in the top 10 for a while now, Whittaker said. Ive tried to demonstrate my ability every time I step in here and make an example. Im ready for those top-five contenders. Im waiting for my shot. Wholesale Authentic NFL Jerseys . DENVER -- Starter Tyler Anderson put his pitching arm to good use -- high-fiving fans in the front row that waited out a long rain delay. There werent many left, with most throwing in the towel on a dreary Tuesday night. The game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies was postponed because of rain after a delay of 2 hour, 32 minutes from the scheduled first pitch. They will now play a split doubleheader Wednesday, with the first game at 1:10 p.m. and the latter at 6:10 p.m.Colorado will throw the lefty Anderson (4-5) and then righty Jeff Hoffman (0-2). The Dodgers will flip-flop their starters, going with righty Ross Stripling (3-5) in Game 1 and lefty Rich Hill (10-3) in the second. The weather is unpredictable around here, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. We thought it was going to be a little flyby (storm) at first, a 20- to 30-minute delay. It just never went away.Rain began falling just as Colorado players took the field for the start of the game. Anderson tossed a few warmup pitches before a drizzle turned into a downpour and sent fans scurrying for cover.Anderson tried to stay loose during the break by riding a stationary bike in the clubhouse and throwing in the batting cage.Later, with the rain still falling, Anderson returned to the field with the hood of his sweatshirt pulled over his head and tested the outfield grass. After lightly jumping up and down a few times, he wandered over to the stands, where he chatted with fans that remained. The Dodgers tried to stay patient waiting out the delay as well.We didnt get our hopes up in any one way, so the understanding that whatever decision was ultimately made, we got to maake good on it, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.dddddddddddd Were fine. And Strip and Rich will pitch, and well go out there and try to pitch a couple games.TRAINERS ROOMDodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (mild disk irritation) threw two solid innings in a simulated game Tuesday at Dodger Stadium. Also throwing were righty Brandon McCarthy (right hip stiffness), lefty Brett Anderson (blister on his left index finger) and lefty Scott Kazmir (neck inflammation). ... SS Corey Seager was out of the lineup Tuesday, but it was a scheduled day off and had nothing to do with being hit on the left hand the night before. Hes fine, Roberts said.Rockies: RHP Tyler Chatwood (strained back) threw 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs in a rehab assignment with Double-A Hartford on Monday. When Chatty is ready to go, were going to plug him in, Weiss said.CLOSE WATCHThe Dodgers are keeping a close watch on the number of innings rookie Julio Urias logs this season. The lefty already has thrown 63 innings for the Dodgers heading into his start Friday. Injuries have forced the team to lean a little more heavily on him than anticipated. It was important to get him to a certain threshold this year, just to build off of for next year, explained Andrew Friedman, the teams president of baseball operations. Because of injuries, probably get there sooner that we wouldve liked. Thats the way things have played out this year. Hes had a big part in where we are this year.Should the Dodgers make the postseason, Urias might contribute out of the bullpen. ' ' '
