SAN DIEGO -- Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said his overnight hospital stay was due to diverticulitis, an existing condition that flared up before practice Tuesday. The 63-year-old said in a 3-minute press conference late Wednesday morning that hes feeling much better and that he plans on attending Arizonas practice with the San Diego Chargers later in the afternoon.Im too old not to listen to doctors anymore, Arians said. I have a tendency to push it but Ill go out today and see how long well stay. Its nothing serious.Arians has been on a fairly strict diet recently, which made Tuesdays health scare a surprise to the coach. It was odd that it happened, Arians said.Arians said doctors told him to change his diet slightly, drink a lot of fluids and stay inside.Arians said the pain was building throughout Tuesday, eventually causing him to double over about 30 minutes before the joint practice at Qualcomm Stadium was to begin. He was rushed to a local hospital in an ambulance. Arians initially thought he was suffering from kidney stones but didnt show any of the symptoms, which included sweating, a fever or the chills. Arians said he was diagnosed with diverticula during his last colonoscopy.Good thing I do those every two years, Arians said.According to the Mayo Clinics website, diverticulitis is the active form of diverticula, which are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of your digestive system. They are found most often in the lower part of the large intestine (colon). When the pouches are either inflamed or infected, the condition becomes known as diverticulitis, of which one major symptom is abdominal pain, the website said. Mild cases are treated with antibiotics, rest and a change in diet.Arians said he knew following the colonoscopy that the condition could flare up.He was mad that he missed Tuesdays practice because it was a good one. Despite quarterback Carson Palmer and cornerback Patrick Peterson joking Wednesday that Arians likely watched tape of the practice in the hospital, he said he watched it Wednesday morning at the hotel.Arians sense of humor wasnt hampered by his health. He joked that his absence from Tuesdays practice was part of his plan to use the San Diego trip as a lesson in being prepared for a changing schedule.Yeah, I did it on purpose, Arians quipped. Andy Murrays service syndrome may be a thing of the past It was Andy Murray who beat Fernando Verdasco as a 23-year-old back in 2009, and now the future bodes well for emerging star Thiem, says Sky Sports Tennis analyst Cowan.Ever since I saw him when he played Andy Murray in Rotterdam, Ive always seen someone whos not only got a big game but someone who is very level headed. Weve seen his progression this year, which has been exceptional, he said. A few days after meeting Jose Mourinho, Dominic Thiem declared himself the lucky one after beating Gael Monfils at the ATP World Tour Finals I thought that Thiem would have the mental edge over Monfils because Gael has lacked matches and he needs matches to play tennis under pressure.I thought Thiem showed great perseverance and its clear what a big game hes got. He going to have a very bright future.Hes going to be put into the bracket of a future Grand Slam winner. Thiem beats Monfils in London Dominic Thiem beats Gael Monfils at ATP World Tour Finals He was stressing to me even if Thiems 10-20 in the ranking, then thats fine by me. Its about improving areas of his game.If he is to become a top five player then hes got to improve his returns and serves, but those are two areas theyve targeted.Hes up to eight in the rankings now and hes still got some rough edges. Leif Shiras asks Thiem to guess the shot during his win over Monfils Thiem said it would be a shame if the single-handed backhand died during his pre-tournament conference on Friday, and although it never came as a natural element to his game, Cowan enjoys the fact it works so well for him.I love it, he said. The ability to be able to generate as much pace as he does. And of the eight finalists hes top on average speed of forehand. Heres a guy who can seriously pack a punch off both wings.
