The 71-year-old Spurrier flashed Bolts To The World pose to all four sides of the newly renamed Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Antworten

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- On a night when retired coach Steve Spurrier was honored along with his 1996 national championship team, No. 25 Florida looked nothing like a potential Southeastern Conference title contender.Luke Del Rio threw two touchdown passes in his first career start, and the Gators did just enough to beat UMass 24-7 on Saturday night and extend the nations longest winning streak in season openers to 27.It was far from the offensive resurgence the Gators were hoping for after ending last season with three consecutive losses. We have expectations every game, Del Rio said. We obviously want to score more points, but we got the win. Thats the most important thing.Things were so ugly for much of the night that Spurrier provided most of Floridas early highlights. After having Florida Field named after him and then leading 90,000 rain-soaked fans in a pre-game cheer, Spurrier posed like Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt. The 71-year-old Spurrier flashed Bolts To The World pose to all four sides of the newly renamed Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. It drew a raucous ovation from fans on hand for the opener.I just planned it myself, Spurrier said. I didnt tell anybody, either, `cause I thought theyd spill the beans. You know, its never been done before. Im a guy that likes to do a little different stuff, so I was the first to do the Usain in the middle of the field. Many inside the sold-out Swamp were there for Spurrier, who was honored in a number of ways. Not only was the field named after him, but Spurrier served as the honorary Mr. Two Bits. At halftime, he was recognized again for the 50th anniversary of his 1966 Heisman Trophy and honored along with the 1996 team.Spurrier said the best parts of the day were watching his name unveiled on the stadium and then seeing band members wearing visors to honor him.Florida coach Jim McElwain probably could have used one -- to slam to the ground. It was fun to get back after it and really get that taste of the last ballgame we played out of our mouth, McElwain said. Obviously, as you watched the game, weve got a long way to go.The Gators had trouble blocking the 36 1/2-point underdogs up front and creating holes in the running game. Del Rio completed 29 of 44 passes for 256 yards, with TD passes to Antonio Callaway in the first quarter and Brandon Powell in the fourth.Floridas defense was solid except for one scoring drive in which it was flagged three times for 35 yards and allowed a fourth-and-14 conversion.Newcomer Eddy Pineiro kicked three field goals, including from 49 and 48 yards in the fourth that gave Florida a little extra breathing room and started chants of Eddy! Eddy! This is a dream come true, said Pineiro, who played soccer in high school and had never kicked in a meaningful game. Ive worked my butt off for two years, came in here as an early enrollee and worked very hard for this moment.THE TAKEAWAYUMASS: The schedule doesnt look so daunting now. UMass has two more Southeastern Conference teams on tap this fall, but after watching Mississippi State (lost to South Alabama) and South Carolina (edged Vanderbilt) in openers, theres reason to believe coach Mark Whipples team can be in, or maybe even win, both of those games.FLORIDA: Could be another trying season for Florida quarterbacks. The Gators clearly still have holes along their offensive line, a problem that plagued the offense last year and really stood out during the season-ending, three-game losing streak.UP NEXTUMASS: The Minutemen return home to play Boston College, which is coming off a loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland. UMass has dropped eight in a row in the series and 19 of 23 overall.FLORIDA: Opens SEC play at home against Kentucky. The Gators have won 29 straight in the series, the nations longest active streak between any two opponents.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Nike React Sale . -- Claudio Bieler hadnt scored since early September, and not from the run of play since mid-July. Thursday night, in front of 5,265 at Shaw Park, Kevin Moesquit singled home Josh Mazzola with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th as the Fish battled back from an early 5-1 deficit and then a 7-5 deficit in the 12th to beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 8-7 in a thriller. The Goldeyes had runners in scoring position in the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th innings, but couldnt get a clutch hit to bring home the winning run. Then in the bottom of the 12th, shortly after Lincoln had taken a 7-5 lead, they got a sacrifice fly from Fehlandt Lentini, a game-tying single from Luis Alen and then the winner from Moesquit. With the victory, the Goldeyes took three-of-four from Lincoln, won their fifth straight series, finished the 11-game homestand with a record of 8-3, improved to 37-33 on the season and pulled to within 5 1/2 games back of Fargo in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. The Goldeyes head to Fargo for a huge three-game series this weekend. Winnipeg is also now 3 ½ games behind the Gary SouthShore RailCats for the wild card. With the score tied 5-5 heading into the 12th inning, the Saltdogs drilled three straight singles off Goldeyes reliever Kaohi Downing to open the inning. David Espinosa led off with a single, Curt Smith singled and then Ian Gac singled home the go-ahead run. The single by Espinosa went off the glove of Goldeyes shortstop Mazzola, while the single by Gac went off the glove of second baseman Moesquit. After a walk to Matt Forgatch and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brian Embery, Lincoln celebrated what appeared to be an insurance run. But the Fish didnt quit. In the bottom of the 12th against Lincolns lock-down closer R.J. Rodriguez, the Goldeyes thrilled the home crowd. Ryan Scoma led off with a single and then Casey Haerther and Josh Mazzola walked. Fehlandt Lentini hit a line shot to centre and Mike Coles made a sensational catch, but Scoma scored from third to make the score 7-6. Luis Alen theen singled to drive home Haerther with the tying run and Moesquit singled to right on a 3-2 count to score Mazzola with the game-winner.dddddddddddd It was a sensational ball game -- a game that featured the arm of Goldeyes left fielder Ryan Scoma, who threw out Lincolns Ian Gac at homeplate, not once but twice, including a game-saving assist in the top of the 10th. Lincoln opened the scoring with a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Brian Embery and then added two in the third on a two-run homer by Gac. Winnipegs Amos Ramon hit a solo homer in the fourth to make it 3-1, but Lincoln put up two more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. However, in the sixth, the Goldeyes put up a big, crooked number. Tyler Graham led off with a hustling double and after Ramon grounded out, Ray Sadler singled home Graham. Ryan Scoma popped out for the second out of the inning but then Casey Haerther singled, Josh Mazzola singled to drive home Sadler and then Fehlandt Lentini singled to bring home Haerther and Mazzola. With that, the Goldeyes had tied it at 5-5. The Goldeyes had 16 hits in the game. Leadoff man Tyler Graham went four-for-six with a stolen base and a run scored. Ramon, Scoma, Mazzola and Alen all had multi-hit games. Lentini finished with three RBI. Despite giving up two in the 12th, Downing (3-4, 3.07 ERA) got the win, while Rodriguez (0-2, 4.73 ERA) suffered the loss. He also blew his second save of the season in 25 opportunities. Five Goldeyes pitchers combined to strike out 14 Saltdogs. Starters Chris Salamida of the Goldeyes and Mike Burns of the Saltdogs were long gone by the time this one was decided. The Goldeyes will get on the bus Friday morning and head to Fargo to start on a three-game weekend series against the RedHawks. Matt Rusch (5-3, 4.29 ERA) will get the start for the Fish on Friday night, while Danny Gutierrez (0-1, 2.46 ERA) will take to the mound for Fargo.
