BALTIMORE -- Though improved from last year, the Baltimore Ravens still arent good enough to overcome their own mistakes. And that is why theyre no longer undefeated. The Oakland Raiders, on the other hand, proved Sunday with their 28-27 win over Baltimore (3-1) that playing on the road is no longer an issue. This much is certain: Derek Carr could probably find Michael Crabtree with a pass if they were on a construction site.Carr connected with Crabtree on touchdown passes of 5, 13 and 23 yards. The last one, with 2:12 left, enabled Oakland (3-1) to improve to 3-0 on the road for the first time since 2002.Crabtrees three TDs increased his total with the Raiders to 13 since joining the team prior to last season. He had 14 in the three seasons before that with the 49ers.Crabtree also now has at least four receptions in 16 straight games, all with the Raiders. He said his relationship with Carr is the key.Its no secret. We keep working hard, Crabtree said. We keep working together and we have a great rapport. This is a tremendous situation for me. I feel reborn in Oakland.Coach Jack Del Rio had nothing but praise for his receiver, who he said reminds him off another special wideout.Hes been sensational since Day One, Said Del Rio. I played with a guy named Cris Carter who had exceptional hands. I think Crab has those kind of hands. Some are some other things we learned about the Ravens and Raiders in Week 4:FLAG DAY: The Ravens hurt themselves with 10 penalties for 105 yards. The miscues ranged from five holding calls on the offensive line to taunting by receiver Mike Wallace.I think we had holding on 75 percent of our drives, quarterback Joe Flacco said. Stuff like that is disappointing. It makes it very, very tough to overcome and score points when those kinds of things are happening out there.Coach John Harbaugh said: What we needed to do was put the pressure on (Oakland) more than on ourselves. You keep the pressure on yourself when you have that many penalties.ROAD SHOW: The Raiders long have struggled on the road, but its possible theyve turned the corner after winning at Tennessee and Baltimore in successive weeks. There are some things you have to do as a team, and weve embraced that, in terms of traveling and being able to cross time zones, Del Rio said. That will continue to be critical for the Raiders, who must later this month again travel across the country for consecutive road games at Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, both starting at 10 a.m. PT.The league likes to put us in that (time) window, Del Rio said. It will be important that we continue to take care of business, regardless of where we are.HEAD WEST: In an effort to get the running game going, the Ravens sat out Justin Forsett and let Terrance West prove he can do the job.West didnt disappoint. He gained a career-high 113 yards on 21 carries, a robust average of 5.4 yards per attempt. We were consistent running the ball in the second half, he said. I just took advantage of the opportunity.DUMERVIL RETURNS: Though the Ravens stumbled down the stretch, the return of linebacker Elvis Dumervil should help in the long run.Dumervil missed the first three games with a foot injury. Though he saw limited action and did not get credit for a tackle, Dumervil knows better days lie ahead.I felt rusty, but Im going to keep working and well get it going, he said. The Ravens could use him at his pass-rushing best. Camp Dad launched, not unexpectedly, as a result of standard #daaad-level buffoonery.Last July, tasked with securing a place at summer camp for my then-9-year-old and then-6-year-old, I completely missed a week. Didnt register them. Flat-out forgot. The evening before the camp week was to start, I was frantically surfing through camp option after camp option -- the ones the kids wanted to do were sold out (or way too pricey for our budget).I was consulting at the time and able to take the week off from work (a luxury a lot parents dont have, short of investing their own vacation time). So partly out of desperation, partly out of price-sensitivity, partly out of the creative challenge and partly out of blissful ignorance, I decided at 11 that night to create my own camp -- a weeks worth of fun and creativity, directed by me.The kids would have no idea whats coming -- in large part, neither did I. I gave myself a budget of slightly less than what I would have spent on normal camp for them to cover a week of programming and started making a list of activities wed normally never do.The next morning, I didnt tell them what we were doing or where we were going, but it started with a surprise trip to the bulk-candy store. The kids jaws dropped -- then were stuffed with the kind of absurd candy Id never typically let them have. Camp Dad was so on.I knew regular dad Dan Shanoff could never handle the kind of fun that Camp Dad director Dan Shanoff, so I channeled a muse: Tripper Harrison, Bill Murrays seminal camp-counselor character from Meatballs, the greatest summer-camp movie of all time. If you have never seen the pivotal It... Just... Doesnt... Matter! speech by Murray, this succinctly showcases my inspiration.?*Candy overdose? It just doesnt matter!*Chuck E. Cheese? It just doesnt matter!*Sketchy water park 40 miles away? It just doesnt matter!*Quasi-harrowing parkour lessons? It just doesnt matter!*Abandoning bedtime routines by binge-watching all six Star Wars movies over six nights? It just doesnt matter! There was more -- so much more. Ice skatingg.dddddddddddd Being the only non-family members at the local high school varsity basketball summer league games. Pizza. Ice cream sundaes. Screen time on all of the apps Id never normally let them use. Every day was filled with new adventures. The kids had no idea what was coming but approached every day with a glee like I had never seen before. At the end of the week, both kids said it was the best week of their lives. And if Im being honest with myself -- no offense to the attendees at my wedding or the folks who helped deliver our children -- it was the best week of my life, too.I could attribute their (and my) enthusiasm to the epic lineup of fun activities that I barraged them with -- what parent doesnt want to see their kids having such a great time or get feedback like This was the best week ever, Dad!But as I figure out what kinds of fun activities I am staking out for this summer, I realize it wasnt the mayhem -- it was my mentality. What mattered most was It just doesnt matter. When I fully embraced that idea, all typical parenting pressures evaporated in the July sunshine. I wasnt Dad -- I was Bill Murrays Tripper Harrison. The kids were relaxed. Heck, I was relaxed, despite the overload of activities and sensory inputs. (I even had patience at Chuck E. Cheese -- what bigger testimony could there be?)Im not sure I can live the Camp Dad lifestyle all the time -- it was summer, I took the week off, it was all new for the kids (and me). There were a lot of things that made it unique. But applying even a little It Just Doesnt Matter to my life worked wonders, and I had as much fun as the kids did. We may or may not have another year of Camp Dad this summer, but there is nothing stopping me -- or any of us -- from easing up just enough to make the summer more awesome.Dan Shanoff writes about parenting for espnW.
