ANAHEIM -- Right-hander Jered Weaver continues his rugged struggle of a season when his Los Angeles Angels meet the Chicago White Sox in Sundays final game of their weekend series. As recently as 2014, Weaver was one of baseballs best. He shared first place in the American League that year with 18 victories and in the majors overall with 34 starts.Since then, however, assorted physical problems and decreasing velocity dramatically reduced Weavers effectiveness. Last season was the worst of his career; the right-hander compiled a 7-12 record and a 4.64 earned-run average. Until 2015, Weaver never won fewer than 11 games or finished with an ERA higher than 4.33.This season, Weaver matched last years victory total but is allowing opponents to bat .294 and is projected to finish with a career-worst 4.93 ERA. After collecting five quality starts in the first two months, Weaver has had just three since, though he conceded just one run, one walk and four hits in six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 6 while striking out five in a 7-2 victory.I dont know if its ever easy, Weaver told MLB.com. Im just trying to locate pitches and keep those guys off balance. One constant in the midst of fluctuating success is Weavers personal tenacity.Jered competes, manager Mike Scioscia told MLB.com after Weavers latest victory. Just having that element inside of him lets him go out with whatever his tools are and try to win.For the past two seasons, that tenacity provided the foundation for professional survival.About 80 percent of the league wouldnt have been throwing with what Ive been throwing the last couple of years, Weaver told MLB.com.One of Weavers goals will be to extend Chicagos streak of consecutive innings without scoring. The White Sox enter Sundays game having not scored in 32 innings.Opposing Weaver will be right-hander Jacob Turner, who will be making his first major league start in two years. Turner was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte after Saturday nights 1-0 loss and replaces left-hander Carlos Rodon, who is on the disabled list with a sprained left wrist.Turner, who signed as a free agent in December, made 18 starts for Charlotte. Despite pitching a complete-game shutout, the 25-year-old owns a 4-7 record and a 4.71 ERA. In 107 innings, Turner has allowed 29 walks and 125 hits, including 10 home runs, while amassing 85 strikeouts. Before signing with the White Sox, Turner spent four seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs. He won his last major league start Sept. 28, 2014 for the Cubs against the Milwaukee Brewers.Left-hander Chris Sale, who started for the American League in Tuesday nights All-Star Game and pitched one inning, would be pitching on four days rest had he received the start Sunday. But Ventura wanted to give Sale another day off. Sale will pitch Monday night in Seattle.I think they pitch harder in that game than they probably would in a normal game, said Ventura, a two-time All-Star. They definitely throw more fastballs than in a normal game. Thats part of the experience. I know it was only one inning but we wanted to make sure he had extended rest. Cheap Nike MLB Jerseys . SAN FRANCISCO -- Bring on the lightweights. That is the new battle cry of the staggering San Francisco Giants, who completed the heavyweight division of their schedule with a one mighty punch Thursday night, salvaging one of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers on newcomer Matt Moores one-hitter.The Giants (69-58) flew out of Los Angeles early Friday morning trailing the Dodgers (71-56) by two games in the National League West. The good news is, despite having gone a major-league-worst 12-25 since the All-Star break, they still have a three-game cushion over the Miami Marlins (66-61) in the race to earn one of two NL wild cards. And the best news of all is: Twenty-one of their last 35 games are against the Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies. The stretch breeze begins with a five-game homestand against the Braves (three games) and Diamondbacks (two).Moore will pitch the fifth of the five games next Wednesday, and he hopes his effort in Los Angeles can trigger a turnaround that has him trying to extend a winning streak by then.Today was fun, he said after his masterpiece Thursday. Hopefully, moving forward, we can build off this. The Thursday victory ended a brutal stretch in which the Giants played 19 consecutive games against playoff contenders -- four against the New York Mets, and three against the Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, Marlins and Washington Nationals. The Giants went 7-12 in those games, taking them from a two-game lead in the West to their current two-game deficit. So, bring on the Braves, who have the third-worst record in the NL (116-23) since the All-Star break, and then the Diamondbacks (15-23), who have the second-worst mark in that span.ddddddddddddThe Giants will open the Atlanta series with right-hander Jeff Samardzija (10-9, 4.17 ERA) on the mound. He is coming off one of his best games of the season, a 2-0 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday in which he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the first time in his career. That night, he was up against Mets ace Noah Syndergaard. On Friday, he will see Braves rookie right-hander Joel De La Cruz, who is still looking for his first major league win. De La Cruz is 0-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 14 games (seven starts).De La Cruzs last effort was his worst, as he was roughed up for seven hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings during a no-decision against the Nationals.Samardzija is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 11 career appearances (five starts) against the Braves. He took the loss in a 5-3 defeat in Atlanta on May 30, allowing four earned runs in five innings.De La Cruz, who made his debut for the Braves on June 29, has never faced the Giants. The Braves are coming off a 2-2 split in their four-game series at Arizona. That constitutes a hot streak for a club that had lost seven of its previous eight. However, Atlanta might have to open the San Francisco series without its best hitter, as first baseman Freddie Freeman took a hard fall chasing a foul pop up in the Thursday win.Im just glad I didnt hit my head, Freeman said. Im going to be pretty sore (Friday).
