Welcome to Week 10! Were down to four teams on bye this week, but in combination with the injuries, there are still difficult choices for fantasy owners. The teams on bye this week are the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts and the Oakland Raiders, while the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens have already played on Thursday (as the Browns lost yet another game while offering little in the way of fantasy point production).Injury concerns regarding players heading into the Sunday and Monday games can be critical. Each Saturday, this entry will be dedicated to each player who appears on the official weekly NFL game status injury report and how his status might impact fantasy teams. For those who might be new to this feature: Injury reports provide some insight into a players status. The NFL requires teams to submit practice injury reports several times a week, identifying the body part that is involved in the injury. This year, there has been a change in the language of injury reporting, per the league office. The most notable change is the removal of the probable designation. For more detailed information on the changes and what they mean, click here.Early in the week, the practice injury reports indicate whether a player did not practice, was limited in practice or was a full participant in practice. On Fridays, all teams file a game status injury report assigning one of the following designations: questionable, doubtful or out. The designations listed here reflect the injury reports filed with the league office Friday evening. Teams playing Monday night do not have to issue their designations until Saturday. The explanation for each designation is as follows:Out: This is the easy one: The guy is not playing this week.Questionable (Q): This remains the most dreaded player designation. By definition it means a player is uncertain to play. How uncertain is uncertain? There is no percentage or measurement scale, so this classification remains rather vague. Whether a player ends up active or inactive often comes down to a game-time decision based on how he feels on game-day morning or how he performs during warm-ups. Final inactives are due 90 minutes before kickoff.Doubtful (D): The doubtful designation means a player is unlikely to play that week. Rarely does a player labeled as doubtful end up playing, unless he experiences a major turnaround before game time. Each week in this Saturday feature, we run down a list of key fantasy players, by position, who appear in the Friday injury report, along with the injured body part as listed on the report, player status and any relevant developments or insight. The primary fantasy positions are covered (quarterback, running back, wide receiver and tight end). This year, at the end of each positional section, there is a subgroup of players: Players off game status injury report. The probable tag no longer exists, so players who would have been listed as probable in previous years are now simply removed from the report. This means there will be players who appear in the practice injury reports during the week but will not appear on the game-status report Friday, since they are presumed active for game day. They are included in this article so that fantasy owners can see where players who were on the practice injury report during the week have been upgraded in advance of the games. At the end, key fantasy players listed Friday as out for the weeks games will appear as a group.QuarterbacksRyan Fitzpatrick, New York Jets, knee, (Q): Fitzpatrick sprained the MCL in his left knee in Week 9 and coach Todd Bowles was clear: Fitzpatrick needed to practice in order to play Sunday. Practice he did, albeit on a limited basis daily. Although he is listed as questionable, ESPN.coms Rich Cimini makes the case for Fitzpatrick to be the likely starter. Still, Bowles has made it a game-time decision so fantasy owners who are rolling the dice with Fitzpatrick may want to wait until the team announces pregame inactives.Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys, back, (Q): It really doesnt matter for fantasy purposes whether Romo is active for this game or not as it clearly remains Dak Prescotts job for the time being. Still, this is a huge development from a health perspective. Romo has been medically cleared and returned to three consecutive days of full participation in practice after sitting out the first half of the season recovering from an L1 vertebral compression fracture. Even when he was playing regularly in recent history, we didnt see Romo practice three days in a row. The team has indicated they will wait until Sunday morning to determine whether he is active for this game. If nothing else, the Cowboys are close to having two healthy, capable quarterbacks, something any number of other teams would welcome at this point of the season.Players Off Game Status Injury Report:Alex Smith, QB, Kansas City Chiefs, head/ear: Smith sat out the Week 9 contest in what the Chiefs described as a precautionary move, but he resumed full practice immediately this week. The team announced Monday that Smith would be the starter, so his removal from the game status injury report comes as no surprise.Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers, knee: Roethlisberger returned to the playing field in Week 9, just three weeks after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to address a meniscal tear. He was rusty to start but improved as the game progressed. His mobility may not be what it once was, but he proved he could get through an entire game without a setback. Another week removed from surgery can only be a good thing, as is the fact that Roethlisberger was able to practice in full all week. His removal from the game status injury report proves the team has no concerns about his Sunday status.Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks, knee: The only body part still listed next to Wilsons name is knee and even that continues to improve. On Monday night, Wilson looked as good as he has since the season started, a clear reflection of his improving health. While he may not yet be 100 percent, his performance in Week 9 should instill more confidence that he can continue to improve in the second half. This week the Seahawks travel east to face the Patriots, not the easiest task, but Wilsons schedule is pretty appealing thereafter.Running BacksDoug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hamstring, (Q): Will this be the week we see the re-emergence of Martin? It appears that way, although its unclear just how much work Martin would handle in his first outing in two months. Out since Week 2 with a hamstring injury (his absence was extended by an aggravation of the original injury during a workout before the Week 5 Monday night game), Martin was in practice each day this week, culminating in a full practice effort Friday. Listed as questionable for the Week 10 game, Martins status was expected to be formally determined over the weekend leading up to a game-time announcement. The Tampa Bay Times is reporting Martin will indeed be active Sunday against the Bears.Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams, thigh, (Q): Gurley cropped up on the injury report with an unspecified thigh injury, and it kept him off the practice field Wednesday. Although he was also listed as a non-participant Thursday, the team did not conduct a practice, so this was merely a projection. Gurley returned Friday and posted a full practice, an encouraging sign. He traveled east with the team and the expectation, barring a surprise, is that he will play. The bigger challenge may be facing a stalwart Jets run defense.Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers, shoulder, (Q): Hyde remained in a non-contact blue jersey in practice throughout the week and was listed as limited. He has said his shoulder continues to feel better, his range of motion has improved and he has raised his activity level somewhat, including hitting the blocking sled Thursday for the first time since his Week 6 injury. Still, there remains some doubt as to his game status since coach Chip Kelly indicated the medical staff will not make a decision until Sunday morning. Fantasy owners who are considering using Hyde should have a backup plan in place. This is a late game with kickoff at 4:25 p.m. ET.James Starks, Green Bay Packers, knee, (Q): It appears Starks has a chance to make his return from arthroscopic knee surgery on Sunday after practicing on a daily basis, albeit in limited fashion. Coach Mike McCarthy has praised Starks efforts in practice, but his Sunday status will still come down to a game-time decision. As ESPN.coms Rob Demovsky points out, the Packers may ease Starks back into action and continue to rely heavily on Ty Montgomery. Fantasy owners considering using Starks will want to check pregame inactives and temper expectations if Starks is indeed active.Christine Michael, Seattle Seahawks, hamstring, (Q): Surprise! Michael was a very late addition to the injury report when a hamstring injury turned up for him on Friday, leaving his Sunday status in doubt. With Rawls still out, the run game looks to be primarily in the hands of C.J. Prosise this week, even as coach Pete Carroll was already hinting at increased touches for him.Players Off Game Status Injury Report: Spencer Ware, Kansas City Chiefs, concussion: Ware was cleared to play earlier in the week. After a week of full practices, Ware is expected to play without limitation Sunday.Lamar Miller, Houston Texans, shoulder: Miller played in Week 8, sprained shoulder and all. He wasnt at full strength, but he still managed to get in the end zone. The bye week came at the perfect time for him, allowing him to return to practice each day this week (limited Wednesday and Thursday, full on Friday). His removal from the game status injury report indicates he is expected to play against the Jaguars.Jerick McKinnon, ankle and Ronnie Hillman, heel, Minnesota Vikings: McKinnon overcame an ankle injury that kept him out of practice early last week to play in the Week 9 contest. His production was limited however (just eight yards on seven carries) and he was in a workload share with Ronnie Hillman and Matt Asiata. McKinnons ankle has improved to the point where he was a full participant in practice throughout the week and he was removed from the game status injury report. Still, its hard to predict how the division of carries will play out this week against Washington. As for Hillman, he appeared on the practice injury report but participated fully all week and is removed from the game status injury report. Expect McKinnon, Hillman and Asiata to all see time on the field.Devontae Booker, Denver Broncos, shoulder: Booker played in Week 9 after sustaining a bruised shoulder the week before and had no reported setbacks. He was a full participant in practice throughout the week, and his removal from the game status injury report comes as no surprise.KaDeem Carey, Chicago Bears, illness: Carey appeared on the injury report due to illness and missed a practice day Wednesday. He was back in full practice Thursday and Friday, however, and is off the game status injury report.Matt Forte, New York Jets, knee: This is now familiar; Forte has a light day Wednesday, then a full day Thursday and Friday. He is expected to make his usual start Sunday.DeMarco Murray, toe and Derrick Henry, calf, Tennessee Titans: The surprise here is Henry, who didnt participate in practice until Friday. Henry strained his calf in pregame warmups last Sunday and was held out of the game. It may be that the decision to rest him in Week 9 aided in his quick recovery. Henry was back as a full participant in Fridays practice, and the team has enough confidence in his health to completely remove him from the game status injury report.Murray has been on the injury report for a couple weeks now with a right toe injury. This week, coach Mike Mularkey said Murrays toe is improving but still painful, given the repeated planting and cutting he subjects it to while playing. Murray was given an off day Wednesday, had a limited practice Thursday and returned to full work Friday. There is no reason to expect him to suddenly give up a dramatic portion of the workload unless he sustains an in-game setback (or another injury). But the insurance Henry provides has to give the Titans some peace of mind, and it wouldnt be surprising to see him at least get some spot work this week.Wide ReceiversDez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys, knee, (Q): It seems a bit odd that Bryant continues to be listed as questionable because of his knee since he has already played in two games since the injury and he has practiced without limitation all week. There have been no hints out of Dallas that Bryant is expected to do anything other than suit up and play.Allen Hurns, Jacksonville Jaguars, concussion, (Q): Hurns sat out Wednesdays practice with a concussion but received clearance to return to limited practice Thursday. He was again a limited participant Friday but had yet to receive full clearance for game play, hence the questionable designation. As of now, his status remains uncertain. This is an early game Sunday, so there will be time for fantasy owners to make a roster change if Hurns cannot go.Will Fuller V, Houston Texans, knee, (Q): Fuller exited the Week 8 game against the Lions with a knee injury. Despite the bye week in the interim, Fuller was limited in practice throughout this week. Between Braxton Miller taking increased practice reps with the first team and coach Bill OBrien saying early in the week that Fuller could be a game-time call, its hard to feel confident about his questionable status. Fantasy owners may want to look elsewhere.Travis Benjamin, knee, (D) and Tyrell Williams, knee, (Q), San Diego Chargers: It is clear that Benjamin is struggling with his PCL-injured knee. Visibly in and out of last weeks contest, he was a non-participant in practice the entire week, a downgrade from what he has done in the past. The doubtful designation certainly makes it appear he will not be available for the Chargers Sunday.Williams had a more typical week. He was not in practice Wednesday but returned to limited work Thursday and Friday. Given that he has played through the questionable tag for several weeks, it stands to reason Williams will do the same again. Perhaps no team will be more excited for their bye than the decimated Chargers, who will have next week off. In the meantime, theyll host the Dolphins at home Sunday in a late (4:05 p.m. ET) kickoff.Jarvis Landry, Miami Dolphins, shoulder, (Q): Landry was added to the injury report Thursday when he did not practice after experiencing discomfort Wednesday. He was able to return to a limited practice on Friday but his status remains uncertain. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald says the Dolphins expect Landry to play.DeSean Jackson, Washington Redskins, shoulder, (D): Jackson didnt participate in a single practice in order to rest his shoulder. Despite an MRI that turned up no significant structural damage, coach Jay Gruden said Jackson was dealing with rotator cuff issues. The doubtful tag makes it easy for fantasy owners to stay away; the hope is that this will be a short-lived absence.Julian Edelman, foot and Chris Hogan, back, (Q), New England Patriots: Edelman has been a fixture on the injury report because of his foot and continues to stay limited in practice throughout the week. He has not missed any games, and that is not expected to change this week.Hogan is a different story. He was added to the Patriots injury report Friday because of his back and did not practice. There is little detail as to the nature or severity of Hogans ailment, but a Friday addition to the injury report with a questionable designation heading into a Sunday night game all makes for trouble for fantasy owners.Victor Cruz, New York Giants, ankle, (Q): Cruz sprained his ankle in Week 9, and while his teammate Odell Beckham Jr. did not expect him to miss time, Cruz appeared a little more cautious. He did say that if he missed Monday nights game, he planned on being available the next week. Cruz was held out of practice all week but has been doing some side work with the rehab staff. Given Cruzs recent injury history, it would not come as a surprise if the team held him out. Either way, it appears the decision will not be finalized until Monday.Eddie Royal, Chicago Bears, toe, (Q): Royal has been out since Week 6 with a toe injury. Coming out of the Week 9 bye, Royal was a daily practice participant on a limited basis. Although he comes into the game as questionable, ESPN.coms Jeff Dickerson reports Royal has made it clear he wants to play in this game. Outside of Week 4, Royals fantasy production has been limited, and Alshon Jeffery is expected to continue to be Cutlers lead target.Players Off Game Status Injury Report: Randall Cobb, Green Bay Packers, hamstring: This is great news. Cobb missed the Week 8 contest with a hamstring injury sustained the week before. In Week 9, Cobb was declared active but remained on the sidelines for the bulk of the game, entering late and notching just two receptions. One happened to result in a touchdown, but it was clear the team was avoiding anything that would force Cobb to stretch the field. This week, Cobb participated in daily practices on a limited basis, and by the end of the week the team was confident enough in his health to remove him from the game status injury report.Mike Evans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, concussion: Evans now says he didnt have a concussion, but he was placed in the concussion protocol nonetheless. He was cleared for full practice early in the week and there was little doubt he would be ready for the Week 10 game after practicing daily without setbacks. His removal from the game status injury report underscores the teams expectation that he will play his usual role.John Brown, hamstring and Larry Fitzgerald, ankle, Arizona Cardinals: Its a great relief to fantasy owners to see both of these players off the injury report in advance of Sundays game. Brown has been battling some issues related to his hamstring for several weeks while Fitzgerald sprained his ankle just last week. Both were kept to limited practices Wednesday and Thursday. Fitzgerald remained limited Friday, undoubtedly a means of protecting him for game day, while Brown upgraded to full work Friday. Both are expected to play Sunday, but its worth noting that coach Bruce Arians bumped J.J. Nelson up to No. 2 receiver (Michael Floyd comes in at No. 3 while Brown is now No.4). It seems the most consistent option is Fitzgerald, who remains, unsurprisingly, the number one receiver for Arizona.Brandon Marshall, New York Jets, foot: Marshall is on the injury report weekly but is removed for games and continues to play. He will do the same again this week.Tight EndsHunter Henry, San Diego Chargers, knee, (Q): Henry is still bothered by his knee and was only a limited participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday. He was able to upgrade to full practice Friday, and it appears he will take the field Sunday alongside Antonio Gates (no longer on the injury report). Fantasy owners should be aware that this is a late game (4:05 p.m. ET) and should have a backup plan in the event Henry is inactive.Martellus Bennett, New England Patriots, ankle, (Q): Nothing has changed here. Bennett continues to appear on the injury report as he is limited in practice to rest his ankle. He has yet to miss a game, so there is little reason to worry about his status heading into Sunday nights contest against the Seahawks.Jared Cook, Green Bay Packers, ankle, (D): The Packers are excited about the return of Cook to practice after he missed more than a month with an ankle injury. Although he is making progress, he is not quite game ready, hence the doubtful tag. Cook is expected to sit this week out but his return does not appear far off.Players Off Game Status Injury Report: Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans, groin: Last week Walker was a late addition to the injury report , et he played and emerged no worse for the wear. Its a relief for fantasy owners to see him off the game status injury report heading into Week 10 as there are no tough decisions to make. Walker was a full participant throughout the week and is expected to play against the Packers.Jimmy Graham, Seattle Seahawks, knee: Graham was running with abandon Monday night, looking like the Jimmy Graham who used to play in New Orleans. Its great to see an athlete return from a career-threatening injury, not just to play once again but to play at his former level. Although he continues to appear on the practice injury report, Graham is off the game status injury report as usual.Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers, knee: Despite being listed on the practice injury report because of his knee, Gates was a full practice participant both Thursday and Friday. With Hunter Henry listed as questionable, Gates is the favored option (although Henry is likely to play).Players already ruled outThis space is intended for a list of key players, not including those who have been moved to injured reserve status, who are officially listed as Out for the upcoming game.Tevin Coleman, RB, Atlanta Falcons, hamstring: Coleman will now miss his third straight game with a hamstring strain. He has not yet returned to practice, but he has increased his running activity. With the Falcons on bye next week, it appears Coleman could be ready to return in Week 12.Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, foot: Rodgers absence doesnt come as much of a surprise considering he remained out of practice the entire week. He did shed the walking boot early in the week but was wearing it again Friday. It appears he has a ways to go before he can return to action.Jeremy Maclin, WR, Kansas City Chiefs, groin: Maclin tried to play through a groin injury in Week 9 but he didnt last long. After his exit in the first quarter, head coach Andy Reid indicated Maclin could miss some time. He didnt practice all week and has already been ruled out for Week 10.Jacob Tamme, TE, Atlanta Falcons, shoulder: After Tamme was injured in Week 8, head coach Dan Quinn said he didnt believe it to be a long-term injury. Still, Tamme will now miss his second straight game and ESPN.coms Vaughn McClure reports Tamme is considering surgery. It certainly sounds like it could be a long-term injury now.DeAngelo Williams, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers, knee: Williams underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday and is out for this week. The team has offered little in the way of detail or timetable, but one would expect him to be out several weeks at a minimum.Thomas Rawls, RB, Seattle Seahawks, fibula: Rawls has resumed running, but his earliest projected return was bumped to Week 11. He remains out this week.Be sure to check out Fantasy Football Now, Sundays on ESPN2 at 11 a.m. ET, for last-minute inactives, rankings, injury impact and more! Jermaine Whitehead . Herath recorded figures of 5-89 - his first five-wicket haul against Zimbabwe - to bowl the home side out for 272 and give Sri Lanka a 232-run lead in the first innings. But after the tourists opted not to enforce the follow-on, fast bowler Carl Mumba picked up three wickets to reduce Sri Lanka to 84-4.With opener Dimuth Karunaratne scoring an unbeaten 54 - his third fifty-plus score in four innings - Sri Lanka went to stumps on 102-4, giving them an overall lead of 334 with two days to play.Although Herath had come into the series with 26 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, he had never played against Zimbabwe in a 17-year career. On Tuesday he joined countryman Muttiah Muralitharan and South Africas Dale Steyn among an elite group of bowlers with five-wicket hauls against all of the other nine Test-playing nations. If you take my career until 2009, I had only taken about 40 wickets with no five-wicket hauls, said Herath. So if you take the last seven or eight years, Ive done a consistent job for the national team. Its a different sort of achievement, which makes me very happy. Sri Lanka batsman Dimuth Karunaratne ended the day unbeaten on 54 Although Zimbabwe reached 134-2 on the third morning in reply to Sri Lankas first innings total of 504, they ultimately succumbed to spin, with off-spinner Dilruwan Perera picking up 3-51 as the hosts lost their last five wickets for just 19 runs.ddddddddddddHowever, it was fast bowler Suranga Lakmal who set Sri Lanka on their way in the morning session when he had Craig Ervine caught at slip for 64 in the eighth over of the day.Herath got in on the action when he bowled Brian Chari for a career-best 80 with a quicker delivery, and then dismissed Malcolm Waller for 18 on the stroke of lunch.Zimbabwe had been rescued by their lower order in the first Test, but after the interval Perera ensured there would be no such recovery as he grabbed three wickets in three overs, including Sean Williams for 58 and Peter Moor for 33.All that was left was for the stand-in captain to pick up a record fifth wicket, as he trapped Carl Mumba lbw.Sri Lanka then tumbled to 44-3 in their second innings, as Zimbabwes bowlers were rewarded for greater consistency.Mumba had Kaushal Silva and Kusal Mendis caught in front of the wicket, while Cremer trapped Upul Tharanga lbw.First-innings centurion Dhananjaya de Silva attempted to rebuild with Karunaratne, but scooped a low full toss straight to extra cover in the final half-hour of the day.Nevertheless, Zimbabwe faced a serious deficit as they look to level the two-match series. Lets be honest, if they put another 100 on it will be a lot, said batting coach Lance Klusener. But at the same time wed like to finish this Test match on our terms. ' ' '

LONDON -- No matter how Wimbledon turns out, both Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro will always have their spot in one of the most memorable matches in the storied history of the All England Club. Slugging back and forth over 4 hours, 43 minutes of withering, backbreaking tennis, the top-seeded Djokovic emerged with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (8), 6-3 victory over del Potro on Friday to move one victory away from his seventh major title. "One of the best matches Ive been a part of," Djokovic said. "One of the most exciting definitely. It was so close. You couldnt separate us. Exciting." On Sunday, Djokovic will play second-seeded Andy Murray, who defeated No. 24 Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to make his second straight Wimbledon final and move one win away from becoming the first British man in 77 years to capture his countrys home tournament. This will be their third meeting in the last four Grand Slam finals. Murray won at the U.S. Open last year and Djokovic won in Australia this year. On Murrays mind every bit as much, however, will be his 7-5, 7-5 win on Centre Court last year in the Olympic semifinals. "Ill take that thought to my head when we play on Sunday," Murray said. With skies starting to darken, the Murray match was interrupted for a half-hour while the roof was closed over Centre Court. Murray protested the delay, saying there was still sunlight left. He had other reasons, too. He had just rolled off five straight games to close out the third set after falling behind 4-1. "Its a tough situation," Murray said. "There were probably 45 minutes of light left. Id like to think this is an outdoor event and you try to play as much as you can outdoors. But I managed to regain focus. I took a shower, talked to the guys a little bit and got back to it." The late finish came courtesy of what had been billed as the undercard, but turned into something much better. Del Potro and Djokovic played the longest semifinal in Wimbledon history. The match came up only five minutes short of the 2008 five-set final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal thats generally considered the greatest match played on Centre Court -- and perhaps anywhere. Djokovic and del Potro spent the entire, sundrenched afternoon exchanging huge groundstrokes, long rallies and even a few laughs during their marathon, which covered five sets, 55 games, two tiebreakers and 368 points. "I think this match is going to be memory for a few years," del Potro said. "We play for four hours and a half on a very high level. We didnt make too many errors. I dont know if the rest of the players can play like us today." Del Potro, back in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since winning the 2009 U.S. Open, saved two match points in the fourth-set tiebreaker, then won the final four points to take it 8-6. Shortly after, the match hit the 4-hour mark, guaranteeing it would surpass the 1989 match between Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl -- a 4:01 affair -- as the longest semifinal in Wimbledons long history. Its not the first time Djokovic has been involved in one of these. His 2012 Australian Open victory over Nadal lasted 5:53. Only a month ago, Nadal outlasted Djokovic at Roland Garros in a semifinal that went 4:37. "When you feel good physically, when you know youre fit and you dont feel a huge fatigue, that gives you mental confidence, obviously," Djokovic said. Sliding on the grass-turned-dirt behind the baseline, doing the occasional splits and, at one point, diving for a shot, then laying on the ground, face-down in despair, Djokovic put on a stellar show, filled with 80 winners but also lots of counterpunching, always making his opponent hit one more shot. Despite the pressure of the match, both players took it for what it was: sports entertainment at its finest. Del Potro played to the crowd and also exchanged a few fun back-and-forths with his opponent. In the sixth game of the fourth set, thee Argentine chased down a drop volley and flicked a forehand down the line.dddddddddddd His momentum carried him to the other side of the court and the shot was called out. Should he challenge? "He asked me, Whats going on? I said, Listen, if I was you, I would challenge," Djokovic recounted. "He said, No, but you know its out and dont waste my challenge. I said, OK, you decide whatever you want. But truly, Im not lying to you." All this was done with smiles on their faces. Del Potro opted against the challenge but won the fourth set anyway, putting his 4-6 lifetime record in five-setters against Djokovics mark of 18-7. Djokovics fitness played a big role in landing him the decisive break in the fifth set. It came with del Potro serving behind 4-3. With the score 15-all, Djokovic hit a drop shot-lob combo to close out a breathtaking 22-shot rally. Del Potro dropped his hands onto his knees and clearly hadnt regained his wind on the next point, when he sliced an easy backhand into the net. Two points later, Djokovic had the break, and the 5-3 lead. He saved a break point in the final game by hitting an off-balance drop shot winner off a del Potro serve return that clipped the net cord. Two points later, Djokovic had his 53rd career win on grass -- 24 more than del Potro. "You can see I played my best tennis ever on grass court," del Potro said, "but was not enough to beat the No. 1 in the world. I was so close." It was quite a taxing stay at Wimbledon for del Potro, who came into the semifinal with his left knee heavily taped, a victim of two nasty slips that sent him tumbling earlier in the tournament. The second fall came two days earlier, on the fifth point of his quarterfinal win over David Ferrer. Del Potro said the trainer gave him a couple of "magic pills" -- anti-inflammatories -- and that kept him going. Against Djokovic, del Potro showed few signs of an aftereffect. Tested throughout the match by a variety of Djokovic drop shots, del Potro got to most. More than once, the Argentine chased the ball from wide of the court on the forehand side to wide of the court on the backhand side. After going wide in the third set to hit one of his 48 winners, del Potro stood on the ledge separating the court from the stands, waiting for a high-5 from one of the fans at courtside. The fans soaked in the del Potro experience, cheering on the underdog as he pushed the worlds best player to the limit. "They help me a lot for fight, to keep trying, keep going," del Potro said. "Of course Im sad now, but in a couple of days, I will see how big the match was." He may also relive some moments hed like to have back. Del Potro had three break points in the third set and couldnt convert any, screaming in frustration when he framed a backhand wide on the third try. Then, trailing 3-2 in the third-set tiebreaker, del Potro failed to put an overhead away and Djokovic slipped and fell on the dirt behind the baseline while throwing up a weak lob. Backpedaling, del Potro couldnt handle the overhead and dropped it in the net. He lost the rest of the points to fall behind by a set. A bit later, Del Potro lost his serve to fall behind 4-3 in the fourth set, but broke right back, finishing the game with a big backhand winner, a guttural grunt and a fist pump. They held serve until the tiebreaker, and when del Potro won that one, he looked like the del Potro of 2009, the man who broke the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic stranglehold on the majors by overcoming a 2-1 deficit against Federer in the U.S. Open final. If he stays healthy, hell certainly be someone to contend with two months from now in New York. But this week, its Djokovic playing for a title after putting on one heck of a show. "I know that I have been pushed to the limit today, as my opponent was also," Djokovic said. "It was one of the most thrilling matches that I have ever played, especially here in Wimbledon." ' ' '
Bengal Warriors Jang Kun Lee produced an inspirational performance, but his teams hopes of reaching the semifinals ended after Telugu Titans snatched a tie late in the game. Warriors, who had to win to stay in the hunt, remain rock bottom, with 20 points from 11 matches; Titans are third, with 32 points.?Warriors began the match well, racing into a 3-0 lead in the first minute after Lee scored a two-point raid, but Titans Nilesh Salunke responded with two points of his own to immediately cut the deficit. Titans upped the pressure as the half wore on, and an all-out in the 10th minute gave them a 12-5 lead; Salunke starred with six points. ?Warriors, however, finished strongly and forced a super tackle to trail 19-14 at the end of the first half. The momentum with them, Warriors came out with more urgency in the second half. Vishal Mane scored two vital tackle points, before Monu Goyat scored two raid points to level the game at 20-20. Lee followed that up with four more raid points, before inflicting an all out, as Warriors took a two-point lead after 28 minutes.?However, Salunke got rid of two Warriors players in the 30th minute, to once again tie the score. With neither team willing to take too many risks, a few empty raids ensued. The match remained tight going into the closing stages, but Warriors appeared to have a slight edge when they were awarded a technical point in the 36th minute, and Lee attained his Super 10 in the 37th. Warriors led by one point going into the last minute, but Rahul Chaudhari scored with a raid in the dying seconds to tie the game at 34-34.? LAS VEGAS -- Andre Ward had just been awarded a unanimous decision victory against Sergey Kovalev to claim his three light heavyweight world title belts on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena when the topic turned to Wards ring future. At the end of his post-fight news conference Ward was asked if he would ever consider moving up to the heavyweight division, where it is rare for a light heavyweight to find success. All-time greats such as Roy Jones Jr., Michael Spinks and Bob Fitzsimmons won world titles in both weight classes, but they are the exception. Other greats such as Archie Moore and Bob Foster failed when they moved up.Boxings marquee division does interest Ward (31-0, 15 KOs), whose win over Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) was tinged in controversy because Ward, who got knocked down in the second round, was given winning scores of 114-113 on all three judges scorecards even though the majority of media had Kovalev winning a close fight.Ward, however, said any move up to heavyweight would have to be the right situation. He ruled out facing giants of the division such as world titleholders Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua, enormous men who would have huge height and weight advantages.Theres certain guys you dont mess with and those guys are too big, Ward said. I respect them, but you got to find the right opponent and the right situation. So maybe one day, maybe not, but not those two.Ward said if he made the move, he would instead look to follow in the footsteps of Jones, who was the undisputed light heavyweight world champion when he moved up to heavyweight for a shot at John Ruiz, a solid but unspectacular heavyweight who had a world title belt.Jones, who built himself into a rock-solid 193-pound fighter under the guidance of famed strength and conditioning coach Mackie Shilstone -- who also worked with Ward to prepare him for Kovalev -- easily outboxed the much slower and stationary 226-pound Ruiz to take his heavyweight belt in 2003 before returning to light heavyweight.Listen, Ive talked about this a lot and I know it sounds crazy. I know it does, Ward said. But I feel like I have a Roy Jones-type of situation in me before my career is over. And I have a great guy to do it with, Mackie Shilstone, but its got to be the right guy. Im not going to let my ego get in the way.Wards future is at light heavyweight for the time being, however. Kovalev exercised his right to an immediate rematch with Ward, so that will apparently be his next fight in the first half of 2017.HBO, which carried Kovalev-Ward on pay-per-view, will air a replay of the fight Saturday (10:35 p.m. ET/PT) along with live coverage of junior lightweight titleholder Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4 KOs) making his first defense against fellow former featherweight titlist Nicholas Axe Man Walters (26-0-1, 21 KOs) at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sabres forward Evander Kane was arrested by Buffalo police Friday, and faces numerous charges for allegedly grabbing three women by the neck, hair and arms during an altercation at a downtown bar last month. The 24-year-old Kane was handcuffed after turning himself in outside the police departments downtown booking facility. Kane was processed and released, and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Aug. 1. He faces four counts of non-criminal harassment, one count of disorderly conduct and a count of misdemeanor trespass as a result of the altercation that happened in the early hours of June 24 -- the same day the NHLs two-day draft opened in Buffalo. The arrest was made a day after investigators informed the players lawyer of the charges and requested Kane surrender himself, Buffalo police downtown district chief Joseph Gramaglia said.Kanes lawyer Paul Cambria told The Associated Press by phone that his client denies the charges. Cambria questioned why Kane was charged with trespassing when he was invited to the bar by the establishments owner.Cambria was also surprised police handcuffed Kane outside the facility, when his client voluntarily surrendered.Obviously, it wasnt necessary, Cambria said. But we dont govern their actions.Gramaglia said it is police policy to handcuff all suspects upon entering the secure facility regardless of who they are or the charges.Gramaglia said the charges are based on allegations made by three women, who said they were grabbed by Kane inside and outside the bar. A male bar employee, who forcibly removed Kane from the establishment, also filed a complaint which led to the disorderly conduct and trespass charges, Gramaglia said.He said no one was injured. The Sabres and the NHL both issued statements saying they are aware of Kanes arrest. The NHL said it will monitor the legal proceedings before determining whether Kane will face disciplinary action. The league added, if necessary, it could determine to have Kane directed to the NHL/NHL Players Associations behavioral health professionals for evaluation and counselling. The arrest is the latest in a string of off- and on-ice troubles for Kane, who has two years remaining on his contract. In March, prosecutors announced after a three-month investigation that Kane would not face a sexual assault charge stemming from a December incident because there was no evidence to support the allegation.Kane also ran into trouble with the Sabres, who suspended him for one game in February after he slept in and missed practice. It happened a day after pictures surfaced on social media of Kane celebrating in Toronto after attending the NBA All-Star game.Three weeks ago, Sabres general manager Tim Murray expressed concern about Kane by saying the player needs to behave better.Hes going to have to pick and choose his spots when he goes out a lot better than he does, Murray said. Whether he has done these things or not, or he is guilty of these things or not, its not something I like getting up in the morning and reading about thats for sure. The fourth player selected in the 2009 draft, Kane completed his first season in Buffalo after being acquired in a multiplayer trade with Winnipeg in February 2015. He scored 20 goals and added 15 assists in 65 games last season.---This story has been corrected to reflect altercation happened on June 24. Cheap Jerseys From China . SEOUL, South Korea -- Police in South Korea are investigating Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang for allegedly crashing a luxury car while driving under the influence of alcohol and then leaving the scene.Police are also investigating whether Kang asked a friend to falsely report who was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred early Friday morning, according to an official at Seouls Gangnam district police station who spoke on condition of anonymity.According to police, Kang didnt stop after driving a rented BMW into a guardrail at around 2:48 a.m. while returning to his hotel in southern Seoul. The crash damaged the guardrail, and the vehicle, and the debris hit a car parked nearby. The person in the parked car reported the matter to police.A 29-year-old man who was in Kangs vehicle initially claimed to be the driver. But police questioned Kang after the vehicles security camera showed him driving it.Police said Kangs blood alcohol level at the time of the crash would have been 0.084 percent, beyond the countrys 0.05 percent legal limit. Kang has so far denied asking or intimidating the friend into falsely reporting to police, the police official said.Pirates President Frank Coonelly issued a statement saying the club was aware of the serious charges filed against Kang.We are extremely disappointed in Jung Ho and in his decision process during this matter, Coonelly said. I know first-hand how foolish and dangerous it is to drive under tthe influence and am most thankful that, as we understand it, no one was injured.dddddddddddde will have further comment once we have been able to gather all of the relevant facts and speak with the player.Kang, 29, signed a four-year, $11 million deal with the Pirates in 2015 after Pittsburgh paid his Korean club, the Nexen Heroes, $5 million to negotiate with the slugger. He hit .287 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI for the Pirates during his rookie season, which ended abruptly in September when Kang injured his left knee while at the receiving end of a takeout slide by Chris Coghlan of the Chicago Cubs.Kang hit 21 home runs and 62 RBI in 103 games in 2016, but his second season in the majors also included an off-the-field incident in Chicago in June when a 23-year-old woman reported being assaulted by Kang at a hotel. The womans name has not been released and Kang has not been charged. The incident in Seoul on Friday adds to a turbulent week for the Pirates, who are also exploring trade offers for All-Star centerfielder Andrew McCutchen. WASHINGTON -- D.C. United and city officials signed an agreement Thursday that would keep the Major League Soccer franchise in the District of Columbia with a new, $300 million soccer-only stadium. The city and the team would split the cost of the stadium, which is tentatively scheduled to open in 2016 in an industrial section of southwest Washington known as Buzzard Point. D.C. United, which has played in aging RFK Stadium since MLS launch in 1996, had considered relocating to suburban Maryland, Virginia or even Baltimore. But co-owner Jason Levien said Thursday that hes been negotiating to keep the team in the district since he bought the club last year. The design for the new stadium has not been finalized, but officials said Thursday it would seat 20,000 to 25,000 people. The city will pay $150 million to acquire the land for the stadium and improve infrastructure, raising money for the deal through a complicated series of land swaps, while the team will spend $150 million to build the structure. "This is a landmark day for D.C. United," Levien said. Mayor Vincent Gray said RFK "was never suited well for soccer" and has "become a real anachronism." D.C. United won three of the first four MLS Cups but has fallen on hard times in recent years. The team sits at the bottom of MLS Eastern Conference at 2-14-4 record, having scored just nine goals in its 20 games. Levien and United coach Ben Olsen said they believed the new stadium would improve the product on the field. Of the 19 MLS clubs, 15 play in soccer-specific stadiums, and San Jose is scheduled to open a new stadium next year. Levien said those with new facilities have seen increases in attendance and improved play. "D.C. United from the get-go was at the forefront of MLS," Levien said. "Thats where we need to return it." Said Olsen: "Its going to drive our culture and our fans and our team to new heights. Theres going to be a pep in everyones step in the locker room." The deal requires the approval of the D.C. Council, which engaged in a protracted fight over using public funds to build Nationals Park, which is less than a mile away. The baseball stadium ended up costing the city nearly $700 million. Five of the 13 councilmembers attended Thursdays announcement and said they supported the deal. Councilmember Jack Evans said the city would get good value out of the swap, under which developer John Akridge would receive the rights to redevelop the city-owned Reeves Center office building in the fast-growing 14th Street, Northwest, corridor, in exchange for his land at the stadium site. The city plans to build a new Reeves Center in southeast Washington. "This is not controversial like the baseball stadium," Evans said. "This is a pretty straightforward deal. Its good for the city." The other parcels on the site are owned by the utility Pepco, which has a large power plant nearby, and investor Mark Ein, who attended Thursdays announcement along with Pepco representatives. Terms of those swaps have not been finalized. According to the agreement, the city has until Jan. 1 to obtain the land and get approval from the council and, if necessary, from Congress; if the city doesnt meet the deadline, D.C. United can back out of the deal. And while officials said they want the stadium to open in time for the 2016 season, the agreement only calls for the stadium to be ready by Jan. 1, 2017. In addition to the power plant, the site is bordered by the Armys Fort McNair and the Anacostia River, making it largely cut off from the rest of the city. The nearest Metro stop is about a 15-minute walk away. City officials said infrastructure improvements, including a possible streetcar stop, would make it more accessible. The move would leave RFK Stadium, the 52-year-old former home of the Washington Redskins and the Nationals, without a full-time tenant. There are no firm plans to redevelop that site once D.C. United leaves. Cam Newton has hit back at critics of his post-match press conference following the Carolina Panthers defeat in Super Bowl 50. Newton refused to answer questions properly when speaking to reporters immediately after the 24-10 reverse to the Denver Broncos before walking out of the press conference in frustration, saying Im done, man. That prompted heavy criticism of the quarterback, who was named the leagues MVP after a stellar regular season and playoff run, but was sacked seven times in the game as the much-vaunted Panthers offence was stifled by the Broncos all-consuming defence. Newton offered one-word answers in his post-match press conference However, he responded on Tuesday by questioning those who had judged him since Sundays disappointment.Im human. I never once said that I was perfect, I never proclaimed that I was perfect, he said. But at the end of the day who are you to say that your way is right? Weve got all these people condemning and saying he should have done this, but what makes your way right? Ive been on record as saying Im a sore loser. Who likes to lose? ROME -- Irresponsible, unsustainable and unaffordable.Refusing to put up with more debt in a city besieged by corruption and poor public services, Mayor Virginia Raggi rejected Romes bid for the 2024 Olympics on Wednesday, effectively dooming the capitals candidacy for the second time in four years. This city is unlivable, Raggi said in a news conference at city hall atop ancient Capitoline Hill. We need to focus on that.We have a much more ambitious project for Rome than the one for the 2024 Games, Raggi added. We want to upgrade the services, give back to citizens a city that is as worthy as any other European capital. If approved by Romes city assembly, Raggis motion to withdraw the bid would leave only Los Angeles, Paris and Budapest, Hungary, in the running for the 2024 Games. The International Olympic Committee will decide on the host city in September 2017.Raggis rejection comes after then-Premier Mario Monti stopped Romes plans to bid for the 2020 Olympics because of financial concerns.Weve lost all credibility, if we pull out, Italian Olympic Committee president Giovanni Malago said, ruling out an eventual bid for the 2028 Games, even from another Italian city. Because theyll think people in Italy are not serious.Raggi said it would be financially irresponsible to pursue the bid any further given the city is barely able to get its trash picked up. She highlighted the debts that previous Olympic host cities have incurred and the unfinished infrastructure already blighting Rome from previous sporting bids as reasons to justify the withdrawal. In light of the data we have, these Olympics are not sustainable. They will bring only debt, she said. We dont want sports to become another pretext for more cement foundations in the city. We wont allow it.Raggi drew up a motion to withdraw the bid Wednesday and put it before the city assembly, which has the final say. There was no immediate word if and when the council would take it up.Malago said the committee would continue working on the bid in the absence of a formal vote, noting the next dossier must be submitted to the IOC on Oct. 7.If theres no formal act, we can continue, he said. They cant just declare it in a news conference.Indeed, rival cities werent ready to count Rome out altogether. There is no confirmation that Rome has departed from the 2024 race and as such it is not appropriate for us to offer any comment except to wish our Italian colleagues well during this period of difficult time, thhe Budapest Olympic committee said.ddddddddddddRaggi, a 38-year-old lawyer who is Romes first female mayor, was elected in June representing the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement. The Rome bid was approved by the city assembly last year with 38 votes in favor and only six against -- meaning Raggi will have to put the issue up for another vote to officially end the candidacy. The IOC requires bidders to have support from the government and city.Previous Mayor Ignazio Marino, who was forced out over an expense account scandal, had supported the bid. And Premier Matteo Renzi has been a big fan of the candidacy since he helped launch it in 2014. He has said the bid would be doomed if Romes mayor doesnt support it.A budget of 24 million euros ($27 million) has already been allotted -- much of it spent -- to the bid committee, even though candidacy head Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has no salary.Raggis rejection was another stinging blow for the IOCs Olympic Agenda 2020 program, which was designed to make bidding for and hosting the games more flexible and more affordable.Rome was able to bid only after the IOC changed its rules with Agenda 2020 and reduced the costs of putting together a candidacy, Malago said. The bid had been slated to be centered around Romes historic monuments: a cycling sprint alongside the Roman Forum, beach volleyball at the Circus Maximus and the marathon passing through St. Peters Square and finishing under the Arch of Constantine. Plus, a nightly parade of athletes at the Colosseum.Relying on many venues that were used for the 1960 Olympics in Rome, the candidacy proposed using existing structures for 70 percent of the required sites. The budget had been projected at 5.3 billion euros ($6 billion) -- 2.1 billion euros for the construction of permanent venues and the balance for temporary venues. The withdrawal is another clear signal that the IOC still has a lot of work to do to convince cities that hosting the games is a boon and not a burden.Voters in Hamburg rejected the German citys 2024 bid in a referendum. TOKYO -- The Japanese government approved a 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion) contract Friday to build a new main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a project that has been delayed by more than a year.Officials said the stadium construction would begin in December after an earlier plan was scrapped because of spiraling costs and an unpopular design. The Japan Sport Council, a government-funded organization operating the project, said the stadium was scheduled for completion at the end of November 2019, still five months behind schedule. The delay forced a venue change for the Rugby World Cup that Japan is also hosting in 2019.The cost of an earlier design by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid had risen to 265 billion yen ($2.65 billion), more than twice the initial forecast. The 150 billion ($1.5 billion) contract is just below the 155 billion ($1.55 billion) ceiling set this time for the contractors, a joint venture among Taisei Corp., Azusa Sekkei Co. and the office of Kengo Kuma, an architect who designed the new stadium.Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa told reporters she would ensure steady progress of the construction.Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said she would closely monitor the expensive project that the city is also part-funding.For the burden we have to share, I will ensure its utilized for the people of Tokyo, and raise my voice when necessary, she said.A sports ministry panel is discussing how best the stadium can be used after the Tokyo Games. The stadium delay is part of Japans troubled preparations for the Olympics, underscoring a widespread lack of cost-control. The Japanese organizers have also faced a bribery scandal. They are now also bracing for a possible delay in the construction of roads linking the main Olympic venues near a new fish market project, which has been hit by a construction scandal and tainted underground water. The Tokyo metropolitan government is currently reviewing the ballooning cost because of concern about its financial burden and the impact on Tokyo taxpayers. The city-appointed panel of outside experts warned in a report Thursday that the total cost could exceed 3 trillion yen ($30 billion) without a drastic cost-cutting effort, and suggested using existing facilities instead of building new ones that could likely end up as white elephants.---Follow Mari Yamaguchi at https://www.twitter.com/mariyamaguchiFind her work also at: http://bigstory.ap.org/content/mari-yamaguchiYeezy Boost 350 v2 Cream White Pas Cher . LAS VEGAS -- Neither rain nor heat nor an 8 percent administrative fee could keep football contest players from their appointed rounds. The famous Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest drew a record 1,854 entries despite an earlier announcement that it would take 8 percent out of the prize pool to cover costs of running the contest. This is the seventh straight year that the number of entries has increased -- there was a seven-year low of 328 entries in 2009 when the one-name handicapper known as Fezzik won the second of his back-to-back titles. SuperContestants pay $1,500 to enter and make five ATS picks a week on NFL games.Westgate collected $2,781,000 in entry fees, and the prize pool will be $2,558,520 after the takeout with the champion, who wins 35 percent of the prize pool, taking home $895,482. This falls short of last year when there were 1,727 entries for a prize pool of $2,590,500 and a Denver-area man using the alias rounding again won $906,675.The SuperContest pays out to the top 50 finishers, plus the Westgate increased the bonus for exceeding 67 percent winners from $15,000 to $20,000 and offering the same to the winner of its mini-contest over the last three weeks of the season for those that signed up by the early-bird deadline on Labor Day.In the first weekend of the NFL season, 78 SuperContestants went a perfect 5-0 to share the early lead while another 352 went 4-1. On the downside, there were two entrants that failed to put in their plays along with 58 others off to 0-5 starts.Well continue to follow the SuperContest here at ESPN Chalk with weekly updates. Updated standings and weekly selections from all players can be found on Westgates website, and I also follow the action in the forums at my ViewFromVegas.com website.Golden Nugget contest also sees growthThe biggest competition to the SuperContest in Las Vegas is the Friday Football Showdown at the Golden Nugget. Formerly an invitational open to public handicappers and media members, the Golden Nugget opened the field to the public last year, drawing 87 entrants. This year there are 96.There were a lot of people expecting the Friday Football Showdown, which has a higher price-point at $2,000, to have a biggger increase as it still pays back 100 percent of entry fees to players, but not enough people made the switch.dddddddddddd. The Nugget contest also allows players to pick NFL over/unders as well as NCAA sides and totals in making seven picks a week. This contest has a unique format in which everyone picks games over the first eight weeks with the top seven records advancing to the playoffs -- and then a wild-card chase in Weeks 9 and 10 for the eighth and final berth -- that are held in head-to-head matches on The Las Vegas Sportsline radio show on Fridays on ESPN AM 1100. Updated standings and players selections (as well as the complete rules) can be found on the Golden Nugget website. On the opening weekend, four players -- Jenny Butler, Doc Holliday, Bryan Leonard and Hells Kitchen -- went a perfect 7-0, with another four -- DSHOT702, DMILL, RoughRider39 and Mucked Nuts -- going 6-0-1.College Pick Em draws 162 in redux at William HillWe had a two-year hiatus from having a college-only ATS contest in Las Vegas, but William Hill revived its College Pick Em contest with a $500 entry fee and drew 162 entrants.Players make seven picks against the spread each week for 10 weeks starting with the Week 2 games (they dont use the first week of NCAA games to garner people who are entering contests in the week leading up to NFL Week 1). William Hill had guaranteed a prize pool of $25,000, but with the 162 entries it now has a pool of $81,000 with $56,700 (70 percent) going to the eventual champion. In the opening week, two contestants went 7-0 with another eight at 6-1. College Pick Em doesnt have players use aliases, and instead just lists the standings with players entry numbers. The standings and complete rules can be found on the William Hill US website.Note: There is a second college-only ATS contest in Las Vegas. Its a free roll at the Wildfire Gaming casinos, where players pick 10 NCAA games each week against the contest spread and play for $500 in weekly prizes. The season-long champion wins a trip for two to the 2017 Rose Bowl (or $1,500 in cash). ' ' '
Souther Vipers 156 for 4 (Bates 38, McGlashan 34*) beat Loughborough Lightning 97 (Perry 35, Smith 3-16, Brindle 3-24) by 59 runsScorecard Suzie Bates hammered 38 and bagged two wickets as the Southern Vipers stormed to the Kia Super League final with a comprehensive 59-run win over Loughborough Lightning.Bates gave the Vipers the perfect start with her quick scoring, before Lydia Greenway and Sara McGlashan push the total to 156. With 1200 watching at the Ageas Bowl, Bates then finished off the Lightning innings, after three wickets each for Linsey Smith and Arran Brindle, to give the Vipers four wins from five in the tournament. The result means Lightning will have to overcome Western Storm on Finals Day to decide who faces the Vipers in the final. After smashing 73 together for the first wicket against the Western Storm on Friday, Bates and Charlotte Edwards wasted little time reacquainting themselves after skipper Edwards had won the toss and batted.Bates, in particular, looked in fine form as she biffed cuts and drives to the boundary, before unleashing a massive straight six straight down the ground. Sophie Devine managed to break the partnership on 49 as she had the subdued Edwards lbw with her first ball but Georgia Adams immediately struck back-to-back boundaries to keep the hosts in control.Bates top-edged a sweep to Thea Brookes at short fine leg for a swift 38 - leaving her one run behind Nat Sciver in the competitions leading run-scorer list - and Adams was caught by a good over-the-head catch by Georgia Elwiss but Greenway and McGlashan led the Vipers to their highest score of the tournament with a 62-run stand. The pair added quick runs, with the reverse sweep a favourite shot for both, before Greenway was bowled in the last over. For the Lightning, Evelyn Jones, who had spent the rest of the campaign batting in the lower middle order, was sent up to open and she started well, carving early strokes over the off side. While Evelyn Jones prospered her partner Dane van Niekerk struggled, however, her torment over when she was bowled coming down the track to Smith. Left-armer Smith, who took four wickets on her first Ageas Bowl appearance earlier in the week, bowled Devine two balls later.Evelyn Jones was given a life when Katie George spilled a catch on the square leg boundary but an over later she departed leg before to the standout Smith for 33.Amy Jones and Ellyse Perry attempted to get the Lightning back on track but the run rate slowed to five an over, before Amy Jones was bowled by Brindle. Captain Elwiss was caught by Greenway, Sonia Odedra was run out, and Thea Brookes was stumped to leave the Lightning facing defeat.Paige Scholfield holed out to deep midwicket off Bates before Beth Langston ramped on to her leg stump to hand the Vipers a third bonus point win from three at home. MEMPHIS -- It seemed like a glaring mismatch in the Minnesota Timberwolves favor. The leagues oldest player was defending one of the NBAs premier young talents in crunch time. But 39-year-old Vince Carter got the best of Andrew Wiggins, 21.Wiggins finished with a game-high 25 points, but he didnt score in the fourth quarter until a pair of meaningless free throws with 1.9 seconds left. Give Carter credit, as the old man made things difficult for the young gun down the stretch of the Memphis Grizzlies 102-98 win over the Timberwolves.Wiggins managed to get up only two shots from the floor in the fourth quarter. Both were contested misses.I was just trying to be in position, contest and be physical, said Carter, who admitted he was mad when Wiggins hit the meaningless free throws because he wanted the individual fourth-quarter shutout.I know he jumps a little higher than me now and is a little quicker. Its just, for me, understanding the game plan and making it tough.Hes going to hit tough shots. We saw that early in the game. I just sat there and watched and figured out how I can play him and make it tough. It worked out for us.Carter, the Rookie of the Year way back in 1998-99, is probably headed for the Hall of Fame primarily because of his spectacular scoring ability.dddddddddddd He ranks 24th on the NBAs all-time scoring list with 23,972 points.Carter added only three points to that total in the season opener, but he still managed to have the games best plus-minus, as the Grizzlies outscored the Timberwolves by 10 points in his 28 minutes. Thats a testament to how Carter, who playfully pleads for Andre Miller to sign with somebody and reclaim the title of NBAs oldest dude, has redefined himself as a role player in the twilight of his career.Im at a point that I have nothing to prove offensively, but at the same time, I know what I can do offensively, Carter said. When they need me and the situation calls for it, Ill knock down shots. On Wednesday night, the situation called for Carter to keep Wiggins, who was 7-of-12 from the floor in the first three quarters, from knocking down shots down the stretch. The graybeard answered the bell. ' ' '

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. -- Michigan sophomore Nick Carlson won two matches on the 19th hole Thursday at Oakland Hills to advance to the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals.Carlson, from Hamilton, Michigan, beat British Amateur champion Scott Gregory of England in the morning round of 32, and topped Thailands KK Limbhasut in the afternoon round of 16.It was unreal, Carlson said. I cant even describe it. There were so many people on this last hole. I was feeding off them on 18. ... I didnt really realize how amazing it was to have this big of a crowd until that last putt went in. Just to look out and see people three deep all around the green, it was pretty special.Carlson will face Illinois junior Dylan Meyer of Evansville, Indiana, on Saturday on the Donald Ross-designed South Course that Ben Hogan dubbed the The Monster in his 1951 U.S. Open victory.I cant even put it to words, Carlson said. Sure, everyone is trying to win this, but I was just trying to get to match play, and now Im in the elite eight.Meyer beat Alex Smalley, the Duke sophomore from Wake Forest, North Carolina, who led stroke-play qualifying, 4 and 3 in the morning and outlasted Englands Sam Horsfield in 19 holes in the afternoon.Against Horsfield, Meyer made a 10-foot par putt on the 18th hole to extend the match, and won with a par on the first extra hole. The Big East has nothing to prove.Lets start there, because by now, questions about the leagues viability -- whether it could survive the great college sports realignment of 2010s as a post-schism, basketball-only affair -- feel pretty silly. Of course?it is viable; of course?it can survive. If three years of quality basketball and a 50 percent NCAA tournament appearance average didnt seal the deal, Ryan Arcidiaconos dumpoff to a trailing Kris Jenkins signed those terms on the line which is dotted.By now, there is nothing surprising about the words Big East and good being used in close proximity. Even so, around the league, there remains a barely concealed need to repeatedly prove this status is deserved. League officials will privately fret about media coverage and mindshare. Fans will reply to any overview of the league -- even glowing praise -- with scores of mildly passive-aggressive tweets. Its as if each new AP poll or big hoops weekend is one more referendum on an existential question that no longer needs asking. Its kind of weird.Relative to the rest of the sport, the big hoops weekend at hand is a disproportionately big one for the Big East. Three of the leagues extremely impressive top four teams (No. 1 Villanova, No. 13 Xavier, No. 16 Butler) are all facing quality high-major competition, while a probably-underrated NCAA tournament-level upstart (Marquette) has an opportunity for a major win by way of a heated in-state rivalry.Oh, and thats big in normal terms, by the way -- not existential ones. The stakes simply arent that high, nor should they be. And anyway, if you needed more arbitrary proof of the Big Easts ongoing vitality (and you didnt, we promise!), you could also note this: With maybe two exceptions (maybe No. 5 Duke at UNLV and/or Michigan at No. 2 UCLA), if you find yourself watching interesting basketball this weekend, youll be watching the Big East.No. 1 Villanova vs. No. 23 Notre Dame, Saturday, noon ETVillanovas?Josh Hart is awesome. Last seasons quietest All-American-level player (maybe the least heralded star of any national title team ever) is even better so far this season. Hes averaging more points (17.6) than a season ago (15.5) despite taking fewer shots, in large part because because hes shooting 44 percent from 3 and (gulp) 63 percent from 2. Hart has suddenly become a much more capable distributor, though his turnover rate has remained low, and at 6-foot-6, hes still the teams second-best defensive rebounder -- the crucial reason coach Jay Wrights devastating undersized scoring lineups are practicable on both ends of the floor. For what its worth, Notre Dame knows this blueprint well. Bonzie Colson, the Irishs 6-foot-5 power forward/sometimes center, is arguably the seasons leading spokesman for the benefits of new-age positional versatility. The Irish dont guard like Villanova, and that may be the difference here, but the fact of the matter is that they match up witth the reigning champs -- stylistically, philosophically and dimensionally -- as well or better than any team in the country.dddddddddddd. At minimum, this neutral-floor game in Newark, New Jersey, should be a joy to watch.No. 22 Cincinnati at No. 16 Butler, Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ETUConns sundry crimes against the sport of basketball and/or humanity (even in wins!) arent the only reason Cincinnati has emerged as the clear front-runner in the American. The Bearcats deserve plenty of credit, too. Last weeks overtime victory in Ames, Iowa, was the stuff NCAA tournament runs are made of -- great defense and great offensive rebounding travel well. Good news, too, because Butler wing Kelan Martin is one of the nations high-volume breakout stars. He is using nearly a third of the Bulldogs available possessions, hoisting more than a third of its available shots, shooting it well enough (54 percent from 2, 33 percent from 3) and getting to the line all the time. Martin is just the tip of a deceptively balanced, efficient offensive spear for one of the surprise teams of the nonconference slate.Utah at No. 13 Xavier, Saturday, 5:30 p.m. ETWhat did we grok from the Musketeers 76-61 loss at Baylor last weekend? That Baylor coach Scott Drews team is really, legitimately good. Good enough, in fact, to survive a typically well-coached, hard-nosed Xavier team for about 35 hard-fought minutes -- just in time to break things open late. The Musketeers played well, hung in and lost to a really good team in a true road game in December. Nothing to worry about there. Indeed, this matchup might tell us a good deal more about the Utes than their hosts. Utahs 6-1 record comprises a home loss to Butler and wins over Coppin State, UC Riverside, Montana State, Utah Valley, Northwest Nazarene, Concordia (Oregon), the latter two of which arent Division I teams.No. 17 Wisconsin at Marquette, Saturday, 2 p.m. ETWhile the Big Easts top four have been good thus far -- and the above three teams, plus Creighton, deserve any and all praise shoveled their way -- there may be more to the league. Seton Hall and Providence have looked plenty spry in the early going. Georgetown, like love, is a mysterious fig; who knows where the Hoyas will be in a month? But of the leagues middle, perhaps no team contains as much quiet potential as Marquette. The Golden Eagles got blitzed by Michigan at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 17, and followed up with a close loss to Pitt the next night, which has made it easy to overlook an offense that is A) shooting the ball extremely well from just about everywhere and B) rarely turning it over. Coming off 89 points in 71 possessions in a win at Georgia last week, Marquette has a chance -- at home, even if a few Badger fans invade -- to introduce this scoring prowess to a far wider audience. Megan Walker was rattled by the honking horns and the excited shouts, even in a language she didnt understand. Her first instinct was that she and her teammates were blocking traffic during their seven-minute walk from a restaurant in Astana, Kazakhstan, to the nearby basketball venue, where they would soon be competing. But Walker and her teammates -- decked out in their USA gear -- werent jamming anyone up.The people of Kazakhstan just wanted to say hello. We were like celebrities over there, said Walker, an undeclared 6-foot-1 wing at Monacan (Richmond, Virginia) and the No. 1 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Super 60 for the 2017 class. People stopped us at the mall -- everywhere. We took thousands of photos.Walker said the overseas greeting felt surreal. But then again, Walker, who has narrowed her possible college destinations to Connecticut, Notre Dame, Texas and Virginia, has experienced a lot of memorable moments this spring and summer.Wonder how the prospect who has coaches clamoring and fans praying has spent the past few months? Heres a look at her global highlights, as well as a nod to the decision about her future home that shell make in the coming weeks.Feb. 5: North Chesterfield, VirginiaIn a half-court ceremony before a game against reigning state champion Cosby (Midlothian, Virginia), Walker was given a basketball as a memento for scoring 1,000 career points. She then seemingly tried to get her next thousand all in one night, settling for a school-record 50 points. Monacan won that game 87-73 as Walker made 18 of 27 shots, including going 3-of-4 on 3-pointers. She converted 11 of 15 foul shots and added seven rebounds and five steals.I just had a feeling early on that this was going to be a good game, Walker said after breaking former Virginia Cavalier Tiffany Bowers mark of 46 points. I scored right off the opening tip.And then some.March 8: North Chesterfield, VirginiaWalker, who averaged 21.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.9 assists as a junior, was named Virginias Gatorade Player of the Year. She also was named a second-team All-American by MaxPreps, the only non-senior on the first or second teams. In addition, she repeated as Virginias Class 4A Player of the Year.March 9: Richmond, VirginiaWalker, in her third season at Monacan, led her school to its second straight state title. Monacan had never won a championship before Walker arrived on campus. In the 2016 final at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Walker had 17 points and 14 rebounds in a 93-56 win over William Fleming. Her team set the state record for most points in a final, beating the previous mark by seven points.Monacan coach Larry Starr, whose team finished 29-1, said Walker was just as impressive mentally as she was physically during her junior year. She came back with a new level of maturity, Starr said. We made her captain, and the team followed her like the pied piper.May 1: Colorado Springs, ColoradoAlong with teammates Jaelyn Brown (Cal), Sidney Cooks (undeclared) and Amber Ramirez (TCU), Walker won the USA Basketball 3x3 U18 national tournament in Colorado Springs, leading her team to a 7-0 record. Walker was named the tournaments MVP and also won a gold medal in the skills competition. In 3x3 ball, free throws and field goals are worth one point while shots beyond the arc are worth two. Games are up to 21 points or 10 minutes, whichever comes first. Also, the games are played outdoors, subject to the elements.Theres more space on the floor, she said. You get to show how you can score the ball.May 30: Colorado Springs, ColoradoAfter three days of trials back in Colorado, Walker was selected for USAs U18 team, this time in standard five-on-five, indoor basketball. Of the 12 players selected for the team, seven represented the 2016 recruiting class and five, including Walker, were from the 2017 class.June 1-5: Astana, KazakhstanWalker had to bolt from Colorado to get to Kazakhstan for the 3x3 world championships.Out of 20 teams entered, the U.S. went 5-2 and finished second, losing 21-12 in the final to France. Walker made the three-player world championships all-tournament team, finishing tied for second in scoring.I guess you could say [the silver medal is] satisfying, but it just makes us want to come back next year and work hard to get that gold, Walker said. And now we have experience under our belts so well be even better. In a 19-15 semifinal win over the Czech Republic, Walker had 14 points, including the final six to win the game. She finished with 44 points in seven games.Megan is special, said Jill Schneider, who directed the American team and coaches high school ball at Monterey (Lubbock, Texas).Shes very mature for her age. Shes so good already, yet she is very responsive and open to growth, on the court and off. Shes going to be a great one.June 24-July 1: Sao Paulo, BrazilAfter a brief stay back on American soil, Walker traveled to South America with her Boo Williams AAU team.Walker said Brazil was her favorite country among the three she visited this year, even though the three years of high school Spanish she has taken couldnt completely help her communicate with the Portuguese speakers she met.July 2: Colorado Springs, ColoradoIf you need a tour of the United States Olympic Training Center, Walker is your girl. Walker went directly from Brazil back to Colorado for the USA U18 training camp to prepare with her five-on-five teammates.July 13-17: Valdivia, ChileBack to South America! As captain of the U.S. team, Walker helped the U.S. win an eighth straight gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship.Walker started on a loaded USA team that included some of the top incoming college freshmen in the nation, including 2016 No. 1 prospect?Lauren Cox, who is headed to Baylor, and Walkers TCU-bound 3x3 teammate, Ramirez. Walker averaged 9.6 points and 2.8 rebounds and started all five games. She played the most minutes of anyone on Team USA, averaging 20.6 minutes per game. You dont see a lot of players of her caliber who are that selfless, Harvard-bound Jeannie Boehm said of her teammate. Shes the type of player who changes an entire game.Evina Westbrook, a 6-0 guard for South Salem (Oregon) and the No. 2 prospect in the 2017 class, said Walker became her close friend during their time together in Colorado and Chile. What surprised me was how much were alike, said Westbrook, who has also yet to make a decision on where shell play college ball. The streak was going to end sooner or later. Still, Florida didnt expect it to end in the fashion it did.The Gators left Neyland Stadium in stunned silence after blowing an 18-point halftime lead in a 38-28 loss to rival Tennessee. The defeat ended Floridas string of 11 consecutive wins over the Volunteers.No. 23 Florida (3-1) will look to regroup on Saturday (noon, ET) when the Gators take on Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. The Gators are hoping their second trip to the Volunteer State will have a better ending than their first. The big thing moving forward is what are we going to learn from this and how are we going to let it affect us, Florida coach Jim McElwain said of the Tennessee loss. We have a lot of football ahead of us and theres a lot that we can accomplish. It will be interesting to see how we handle people writing us off, jumping off the ship.Vanderbilt (2-2) is coming off a 31-30 overtime win at Western Kentucky. The Commodores are led by a pair of junior standouts -- running back Ralph Webb and linebacker Zach Cunningham. They play disciplined, they play sound, McElwain said. And I think Cunningham is one of the most underrated players in the league.Florida has plenty to clean up following its second-half collapse. The Gators normally air-tight secondary allowed Tennessee senior quarterback Josh Dobbs to throw for 319 yards and four touchdowns. A Florida offense that moved the ball effectively in the first half went three-and-out on five second-half drives. They came and took it to us, McElwain said. Thats disappointing. We gave them a lot to cheer about.Meanwhile,Vanderbilts performance last week was a mirror image of that of Florida. After a poor effort in a 38-7 blowout loss to Georgia Tech, the Commodores found themselves with a meager five yards of total offense and a 7-0 deficit after the first quarter at Western Kentucky. But the Commodores hung around and instead, found themselves victors as a road underdog.Webb scored on a 2-yard run on the last play of regulation, pulling Vandy even for the first time since the opening minutes of the first quarter. After the teams traded touchdowns in overtime, Western Kentuckys pass for a potential game-winning two-point conversion was batted in the air and intercepted, giving the 8.5-point underdog Commodores the 31-30 victory. The key to Vandys offense was the up-tempo approach it had on the final drive of regulation. With no timeouts left and 1:02 on the clock, quarterback Kyle Shurmur was money, making several nice throws to lead the Commodores down the field to set up Webbs tying run.In overtime, the confidence and rhythm carried over. Shurmur, on a third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, threw a bullet to tight end Nathan Marcus in traffic for the go-ahead score.Shurmur has shown that he can be effective in that type of offense in games and practices. The question now becomes whether the Commodores want to run it.There are two problems. First, the Commodore receivers had a hard time finding space in the first half. When the Hilltoppers played looser coverage in the final minutes, certainly that helped.Second, the defense has faltered considerably since last year. Dating back to the last two games of 2015, Vanderbilt has given up 486 yards or more in five of those six contests. It may be a good idea anyway.Shurmur was yanked from the opener against South Carolina after a first-half scoring drive and couldnt find a groove once he was re-inserted after a pair of drives. Shurmur missed his first seven passes against Middle Tennessee State, but in a pair of rapid-fire drives to end the first half, he hit 13 of his next 14 throws.Since that 0-for-7 start against the Blue Raiders, Shurmur is 50 of 76 for 541 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The 31-year-old Roethlisberger, who will miss next weeks minicamp, is expected to return when Pittsburgh opens training camp in July. "This surgery will have no long-term effects on his health," Tomlin said. The surgery is the second one on Roethlisbergers right knee during his nine-year career. The pair added 150 runs for the second wicket to ease a chase that looked tense at one stage.Malan was unbeaten on 78 off 48 balls with three fours and seven sixes, most of them hit high into the stands beyond the midwicket boundary. Nafees made a 59-ball 65 that had seven fours and a six, but his dismissal, followed by Thisara Pereras wicket in the penultimate over gave Chittagong a hint of a chance before Mushfiqur Rahim finished the win with two boundaries in the last over.Malan and Nafees came together in the second over when Josh Cobb was undone by Subashis Roys slower delivery for six. But the pace bowler dropped Malan on 8 off his own bowling in the sixth over. The pair batted well together, feeding each other the strike when one of the batsmen found boundaries frequently. They got into the groove after the Powerplay but after the 13th over, the asking rate kept rising and Barisal went into the last three ovvers needing 34.dddddddddddd Malan took pressure off the side and turned the match for them with three successive sixes off Dwayne Smith in the 18th over. Mushfiqur meanwhile, reached a milestone during his last-over heroics, becoming the first batsman to score more than 1,000 runs in the BPL.Earlier when Chittagong batted first, Tamim Iqbal began with a lofted drive over cover in the third over before his trademark cuts, pulls, flicks and charge at bowlers brought him nine more fours and two sixes. He brought up his highest score in the BPL with his 75, moving past the 69 he scored in 2015. He fell to a slower ball from Kamrul Islam Rabbi in the 14th over after sharing 116 runs for the opening partnership. Jahurul, who fell in the following over, made 36 with four boundaries.Tamim and Jahuruls partnership came at 8.92 per over, which was also the first 100-plus opening partnership in this season. Chittagong, however, could not cash in on the base - they only added 47 runs in the remaining 6.5 overs, when Anamul Haque and Dwayne Smith conjured two fours and two sixes. ' ' '

With five victories, Jonathan Byrd had such a productive PGA Tour career that spending any time on the developmental Web.com Tour never crossed his mind. His only stop in the minor leagues was in 2001, so long ago that it then was known as the Buy.com Tour.A year after his playoff victory in the 2011 Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, however, Byrd had wrist surgery. He missed three months to start 2013, and his game and confidence slowly eroded to the point that he was trying to make cuts, make money and keep his job.You stop trying to bring your best and youre trying just to stay out here, and thats no way to play, Byrd said last month at the RSM Classic. The tighter you hang on, the farther you get away from what youre doing. With nothing but past champion status that would offer him limited starts, his best option to regain a full PGA Tour card was to spend a year on the Web.com Tour. That can be a tough pill for someone who had never come close to losing his PGA Tour card before the injury.Byrd, who turns 39 in January, brought with him an attitude that is worth emulating for anyone who winds up in that spot.It was humbling, Byrd said. To go back to the Web was difficult. Theres so many reminders every week that youre not where you want to be. But I tried to embrace it. ... MORAGA, Calif. -- Randy Bennett has a long list of scorers on Saint Marys, so thats the least of his worries. When his Gaels get big leads and the bench comes in, now the challenge is sustaining a defensive tempo that this group had last season in regularly holding teams to 40 percent shooting and below.Saint Marys is making strides on both ends, even gaining some good practice against a zone defense Wednesday night.Jock Landale had 15 points and 13 rebounds and the 20th-ranked Gaels jumped to a quick lead they never relinquished to beat Western Kentucky 73-51.The defense is coming along. As a team, its something we practice every day. Coach, as he said, harps on it quite a lot, Emmett Naar said. If we can just improve a bit each day, hopefully toward the end of the season well be pretty good.Evan Fitzner scored eight of his teams first 12 points as the Gaels took control from the tip. He finished with 11 points and three 3-pointers, while Naar had 14 points and six assists.Landale went 7 for 13 from the field and is shooting 65 of 99 -- 65.6 percent -- on the season for the Gaels (8-1), who used a late 13-2 run in the first half for a 38-24 lead.Justin Johnson and Que Johnson each scored 11 points to lead Western Kentucky (4-6).The one thing this team hasnt been very good at, when we get hit in the mouth or get behind were not very good in those situations, WKU coach Rick Stansbury said. We got ahead at Indiana State and played with a lead, but this was a different animal here.Bennett has challenged his team recently to play with more defensive fire, and the Gaels shut down Pancake Thomas. A graduate transfer in his first season with the Hilltoppers, Thomas shot 2 of 8 for four points and missed his three tries from 3-point range after getting a season-best 22 points in a win over Indiana State on Sunday. The Hilltoppers shot 37.5 percent and 5 of 17 from 3-point range to lose for the fifth time in six games. The last couple games weve been able to play our bench and getting those guys to get some reps and try and be as good defensively and as consistent as the first six or seven guys is a challenge. Weve got to get better, Bennett said. Sometimes we sub, we take a dip down defensively. That cant happen.Saint Marys guard Joe Rahon limped off with a right leg injury with 4:37 left before halftime then returned just before intermission and wound up matching his career high with 10 assists. In the first meeting between the programs, Saint Marys jumped to a 7-0 lead in the opening 2:27 and 12-2 then never looked back.BIG PICTUREWestern Kentucky: The Hilltoppers 24 first-half points matched their season low. ... Scolari was Brazils coach when it won the 2002 World Cup and when it was eliminated by Germany in the historic 7-1 loss in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup at home.I got a call from Felipao. He showed his support, wished me luck, said he had trust in the work being done, the 47-year-old Micale said. It was a great honor to know that he was worried with this situation all the way back in China (where Scolari coaches). It shows what a great coach and what a great man he is.Scolari suffered through similar difficulties before the 2002 World Cup, when Brazils national team didnt have the support of the home fans after almost failing to qualify for the tournament in South Korea and Japan. He is a coach with experience, Micale said. He understands this moment that we were going through. He wanted to encourage us.Micale said he has also been getting support from senioor team coach Tite, who made an important visit to the team after the disappointing scoreless draws against South Africa and Iraq.ddddddddddddIts always important to have Tite around us, Micale said. His experience is always welcomed. The easy-going Micale has been Brazils under-23 coach but was not expected to be head of the team at the Olympics. He was given the job when Dunga was fired and replaced by Tite, who didnt want to take over both national teams.Micale said he was relieved after Brazil escaped elimination with the win against Denmark on Wednesday, with goals from Gabigol, Luan and Gabriel Jesus, another promising star who was yet to show his potential despite high expectations. Gabriel Jesus reached a multimillion-dollar deal to transfer to Manchester City just before the tournament began, while Gabigol is expected to soon make the move to European soccer. Both players had struggled in the first two matches.Barcelonas Neymar also played better Wednesday. The effort was there in the first matches; we tried hard but the results didnt happen, Neymar said. This time, we had more patience and we were able to score goals and get the result we wanted. The fans want to see goals and that didnt happen in the previous games, so they get a little upset, but they need to understand that we are not here to joke around. We are here to play football and do our best.Brazil, which will play Colombia in the quarterfinals Saturday in Sao Paulo, remains the main favorite to win the Olympic gold, which is the only major trophy the five-time World Cup champions havent won in soccer. College football season is divided into four very distinct months:?September: The month where teams start to get a reality check on how good they are -- or are not. Most teams play one strong intersectional game and a couple of conference games. After that you pretty much have no illusions about your football team.?October: The football equivalent to golfs Moving Day. October is when the legitimate contenders put themselves into position to make a championship run.?November: They remember what you do in November. The month usually includes a big rivalry game and a conference game that will make the difference in winning the division.?December: If youre still alive on Championship Saturday, the first week of December is when you play your way into the playoff. So we have finished September and the SEC championship race is beginning to take shape. On Saturday October arrives. The preliminaries are over. It is time to play some big boy football. Here are the best storylines for Saturday, Oct. 1:??Life without Les beginsLSU (2-2, 1-1 SEC) fired Coach Les Miles last Sunday after an 18-13 loss at Auburn. Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron, who previously served as an interim head coach at USC, has vowed that he will get the Tigers excited about playing again, starting with Saturdays home game with Missouri (2-2, 0-1) on SEC Network. The key is whether or not Orgeron and his new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger can breathe some life into a listless offense that has only averaged 16.6 points against three FBS opponents.Orgeron has insisted that the slate has been wiped clean and that Saturday represents the beginning of a new eight-game season. Were just going to coach them like heck and see what happens, said Orgeron.??Alabama tunes up for the toughest schedule in the countryWith all due respect to Kentucky (2-2, 1-1), we do not expect the Wildcats to keep it close when they go to No. 1 Alabama (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday. In fact, this will be the 40th time Kentucky has met Alabama. Kentucky has won just twice (1922, 1997) and the Wildcats have never won in Tuscaloosa.Kentucky stumbled out of the gate with losses to Southern Miss (44-35) and Florida (45-7) but has picked up a little momentum with two straight wins over New Mexico State (62-42) and South Carolina (17-10).Its going to be a tremendous challenge for us, said Mark Stoops, the head coach at Kentucky. Here is where Alabama is. The Crimson Tide played one of their most complete games of the season last week beating Kent State 48-0. After this week Alabama faces the toughest stretch of any team in football as they play at Arkansas (3-1), at Tennessee (4-0), Texas A&M (4-0) at home, and then at LSU (2-2) on Nov. 5.??Ditto for TennesseeThe Volunteers played what I believe was their best half of football in 10 years when they rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat Florida 38-28. Now Tennessee (4-0, 1-0), which has been waiting to get back into this position for a long time, has a clearly marked path to the SEC championship. But just because the path is clear it doesnt mean it will be easy.We have to build on what weve done, said coach Butch Jones. We dont take a step back.Tennessee goes to Georgia (3-1, 1-1), a place where the Vols havent won since 2006. Georgia is a team with its back to the wall after getting hammered last week at Ole Miss (45-14). If Tennessee can beat the Bulldogs, it will go to Texas A&M undefeated next week and then host Alabama on Oct. 15.But for those games to be huge, Tennessee has to take care of business at Sanford Stadium.??Looking for a dark horse? Take a closer look at Texas A&MRight now No. 1 Alabama looks to be head and shoulders above the rest of the SEC. But if youre looking around for a team that could upset the Crimson Tide, take a look at the Aggies (4-0, 2-0), who go to South Carolina (2-2, 1-2 SEC) on Saturday. The Aggies were most impressive last week in pulling away from a good Arkansas team to win 45-24. Texas A&M has significantly improved in the areas it wanted to this season: The Aggies lead the SEC in rushing (269.25 ypg) and are fifth in rushing defense (125.25) after finishing 13th last season. Texas A&M held Arkansas to only 120 rushing yards on 40 carries. In one stretch of the game Arkansas had seven snaps inside the Aggies 10-yard line and did not score a touchdown. After South Carolina, they face two other teams that are currently undefeated. They host Tennessee next week and go to Alabama on Oct. 22.Here are some other quick storylines for Saturday:Arkansas (3-1, 0-1) is still juggling its offensive line against Alcorn State (1-2). This will be Arkansass yearly game in Little Rock. The contract to play one Arkansas game per year at War Memorial Stadium ends after the 2018 season.Auburn (2-2, 1-1) steps out of the conference to host Louisiana-Monroe (1-2). The Tigers won an emotional 18-13 game against LSU last week and continue to work on their red zone offense. Auburn had six trips into the LSU red zone last week and did not score a touchdown.Florida (3-1, 1-1) goes to Vanderbilt (2-2, 0-1) where it hopes to get back on track after losing to Tennessee. Remember this: Vanderbilts best player is running back Ralph Webb, who hails from Gainesville, Fla. He had 118 yards rushing last season when Florida needed a late field goal to beat the Commodores 9-7.Ole Miss (2-2, 1-1) has a revenge game when it hosts Memphis (3-0). The Rebels lost to the Tigers 37-24 last season at the Liberty Bowl. Ole Miss will then have a week off before going to Arkansas on Oct. 15. Josh Jackson Super Bowl Jersey . AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan is uncertain what can be done to help Ben Cousins, saying the fallen stars battle with drug addiction is as bad as ever.McLachlan says the AFL is prepared to help Cousins in any way - but hes just not sure how.He (Cousins) has had a terrible struggle for a number of years now and I understand that at the moment it is as bad as ever, McLachlan told reporters in Perth on Thursday.Drug addiction is a huge challenge for the community. We will do whatever we can. Part of the issue is what to do is not evident. But be very clear: the AFL will take on whatever role we can to help Ben.We are in a much better place to have the right type of relationships (with clubs) and to understand the issues.McLachlan arrived in Perth for a visit coinciding with West Coasts celebrations of its 2006 premiership victory, which some say is tainted because of off-field drug issues suffered by some of the Eagles premiership-winners.Earlier this week, Cousins was collected by police after he was reportedly directing traffic on a busy Perth road. The Bronwlow medalliist and former Eagles captain was incoherent and was taken to hospital for observation before being released.ddddddddddddesponding to recent comments from Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett that the AFL gave him an inquisition, rather than assistance, when he initially sought help for Cousins, rather than any assistance, McLachlan said the AFL had come a long way in the past decade.McLachlans visit to Perth coincides with West Coasts celebrations of its 2006 premiership victory, which some say is tainted because of off-field drug issues affecting some of the Eagles premiership-winners.McLachlan said he believed the Eagles side that beat Sydney in the 2006 grand final was a well-coached, strong-running and great AFL team.Clearly there are some individuals who have had significant challenges since. That is clearly disappointing on a number of fronts, he said. But I dont believe it takes anything away from the merit and significance of the win. ' ' '
